I haven't been but, if you want to reimburse my gas costs, I am prepared to drive there this weekend to check it out for you. We'll call it a fact finding mission.

Very tempting grayejectbutton! Do you live far from it? What's the reaction to it over there?

I read on another forum that someone went to it, paid $50 to enter the Indian reservation then another $25 to enter the Skywalk and they weren't allowed to use their camera so a bit of a waste really.

Hi,

We are driving to the Grand Canyon on Saturday 28th April, and visit Skywalk. Will report after the 3rd May.

How long may the drive take us? any idea?

It's about a six hour drive for me but I was only kidding. :)

Good point there, Las Vegas. I have since found out that its about 3 hour drive, so think we may now fly.

For anyone interested in visiting SKYWALK, please note the following as it may change your mind about visiting.

THEY DO NOT ALLOW CAMERAS/BAGS/CELL PHONES/ANYTHING TO BE TAKEN ONTO SKYWALK, this is due to damage of the glass, or perhaps you may even drop your camera over the edge. I was already aware that everyone is provided with protectors for your shoes. They do have someone available on SKYWALK to capture that moment and charge you $20.00 for the privilege. This information is not available on there website, and has only been found by lots of research, and we are all disappointed.

If anyone wants to read the information found, try TripAdvisor.

What a rip off!! Don't think I'll bother if I can't take a camera!

I'm not sure where the Skywalk is - ie: which Rim, but a three hour drive is pretty optimistic!
I drove to the Canyon in just over 3 hours last year and did between 80-90mph a lot of the way. If you drive to the speed limits I think it's about a 5 hour drive :)

For anyone who hasn't yet seen it, website HERE.

I think it's more like 5 hours.

The Skywalk website is quite poor in terms of getting information on its precise location, but it appears to be in Grand Canyon West. According to the site, Grand Canyon West is only 121 miles from LV. Therefore, 3 hours from Las Vegas seems like a reasonable estimate to me, allowing a bit of time to locate the Skywalk within Grand Canyon West etc.

Thanks for the drive time estimate, we had anticipated about the same. We still plan to go, but everyone is so disappointed about not being able to take pictures from SKYWALK, I wish there web site clearly stated that. At least we have found out the information, therefore can make our own choice. We are also looking at a tour from Las Vegas, which includes flying there. I will do a full trip report, and include details of SKYWALK upon our return (early May).

yeah, looking at the map it's well short of the North rim, should be about an hour and a half I reckon! :D

I agree it's a rip off if you can't take your camera - how did thye think people would react to that? One of the wonders of the world and you can't take any pictures to remember it by?? Sounds like we'll give that a wide berth when we get to Vegas, we'll probably take a helicopter trip instead.

It sucks that you can't take photos but I'm sure it's for safety reasons. Obviously, a camera falling on the glass isn't going to shatter it (it's built to withstand the weight of dozens of fully loaded 747's) but it might chip it. Or possibly, somebody might deliberately throw a heavy object at the glass, which would also explain why you can't take anything on there with you. I bet the glass costs a fortune to replace. My decision to visit somewhere wouldn't be based entirely around whether I could take a picture, though I do think the website should make it clear that photos aren't allowed.

It sounds like something I'd like to visit if I was in the area but I wouldn't go out of my way to do it.

I don't think I will bother going on the Skywalk when we go to the Canyon later this year.

I wouldn't mind paying extra if I could take my own fotos. But paying extra to have some fool take the picture he/she wants??? No thanks

Which fool would that be?

I think their point is that if people start dropping cameras onto the glass, it won't totally damage it, but it will eventually become scratched etc and not as nice and clear as they want it to be. That's why they're also giving people little booties for over their shoes. I suppose it keeps it really clean also.

I wouldn't be bothered going to it personally...however I suppose if I was actually going to that park that it's in, and had already paid the $50 to see the park....then I might end up going on it!
