As Kilted Warrior says it is quite easy to do some things on your own, especially as both the train and bus stations are actually in Sousse. If there are a group of you, or you can join up with another couple, you could share a taxi for some of the longer trips - set a price with the driver first and you will have him for the day. The pirate ship trip can be a nice half day, with food and soft drinks provided. You sail out, anchor up so you can swim or fish off the boat, then sail back. You can book this through the fellows down by the port at Sousse or from Port El Kantaoui - remember to haggle for a decent price. The Sahara trip is very interesting though it can be quite tiring as there is a lot of driving. This can be booked through your holiday rep or I booked direct with Saphir Voyages in Sousse - 00216 72 240168 - it worked out at about £60 for two days, including an overnight stay. Hope you have a wonderful time.

Well we caught the local bus to El-Jem for 75p each return (about 64km each way) to see the roman coliseum (well worth a visit)

Also caught the train to Tunis and then used the local train and had a look around Sidi Bou Siad and Carthage

Well done and I'm sure it was a much more interesting experience than some of the organised trips, as well as considerably cheaper. I love the trains and buses and they are fantastic value, especially to us who are used to British prices

Yep the day to El-Jem will stick in my mind for years.

We bordered the bus in Sousse (it was there National express equivalent) and could not sit together and the locals were passing us food. Just outside El-Jem the bus stopped for a pit stop most people got off and had a smoke or just stretch their legs, I lost our bus tickets here. Before we got back on the bus we decided we should get off before the town centre in case there was a ticket inspector at the station.

We had a lovely afternoon strolling around the coliseum, then off to get the bus, the only problem being we did not have a clue how to find the bus station. So we start wandering around asking people for directions, only to find out it's a piece of pavement on the side of the road, by now it's starting to get dark and no busses are turning up. In the mean time lots of people kept on coming up asking if we wanted a Taxi so in the end we follow this chap to the taxi rank. He wanted 12 dinar each for the trip back in the louarge (this is a taxi but in the form of a people carrier and sets off when its full) so we hassle him down to 8 dinar and in we get. One manic journey to Sousse then starts (I stopped looking out of the front window the driver was mad). We arrive safe and sound at the main Taxi rank pay the driver only to find the Dutch couple were paying 12 dinar so we make a quick getaway.

I you are interested I will post the story on how we missed the train in Tunis, when I have time

I've only just caught up with this. You've obviously learned the important lesson that most louage drivers are mad but great fun. Also that recognisable bus stops are as rare as hens' teeth except in places like the main bus depot in Sousse. I had a similar situation getting the bus back from Mahdia as every taxi driver wanted my custom, but the bus did eventually turn up and I was fed chocolate biscuits by small children all through the journey.
