Take euros and a cashpoint card. Some card issuers do not charge for drawing euros from the machine. See the ATM topic on the main page.
banks/post offices and most larger shops will change sterling to evro's at a better rare than the uk. hotels nearly all offer an exchange service but not usualy at as good a rate
we always take enough euro with us, but people were using the ATM but it did run out a couple of times and this was in May. you get a slightly better rate in greece than you do in the uk.
you could also change your sterling up at our apartments where we stayed.
we are of to kefalonia on the 10th May, and i have just got my euros from marks and spencers 1.42. they are always the best rate, compared to the bank.
i hope this helps.
michele
