That certainly sounds like the Festival of San Juan. It is celebrated in many town and villages. The duration of the festivities can vary slightly around the region, mostly between 21 and 25 June. But the main event should be on the night of 24 June. You may be able to obtain more info about specific events in Altea by e-mailing the local tourist office:

Yes, it is called San Juan or Saint John in english.
It is a National holiday on the 24th June (Saint John's Day)....so the date never changes.
In Altea I think you may be referring to the evening of the 23rd June where bonfires are lit to burn all through the night until midnight.

In Alicante they make the fiesta last a few days... Las Hogueras de San Juan (the bonfires of San Juan) the date is 20th- 24th June.

The actual feast day does not change, it is the duration of the festivity period which may vary. For example, Comunitat Valenciana indicates that festivities take place in Altea from 22 to 25 June, but in Benidorm from 21 to 24 June. Other towns show different dates and durations. Some sites indicate bonfires and fireworks on 23 June, while others say 24 June. But by e-mailing Altea Tourism, you may be able to obtain a programme of events specifically for that town.
