Hi all
I've just stumble across this forum in my search for an adventure holiday. I've always had a thing for all thing Egyptian and I've been thinking of going with my brother to see the pyramids and temples. But I no nothing when it comes to holidays.

I what to go to Egyptian, but I don't want to be bored so I need a place where things are planned by a tour-guide. I want to see the Ancient Temples & Pyramids, I want to go up the Nile, and see!!! hell I don't know.

I was thinking of a going for a week, but I don't know the best places, where to book, how much its going to cost, best times to go, best hotels.

I don't really want to spend to much this time around.

Hi there,

As a rule, you can pick up some relatively cheap charter flights with UK operators to Egypt (flying into Luxor airport). From there you could probably book a 7 night cruise to tie in with your flights or one of the shorter 3 or 4 night Nile cruises.

I just used this company http://www.memphistours.com/ to pre-book our cruise and a compartment on the overnight sleeper train from Luxor to Cairo. The guy there is called Mr Sherif and we found him extremely helpful and friendly. Everything went according to plan for us and we travelled from Cyprus to Cairo, Cairo to Aswan, Cruise to Luxor, Luxor to Cairo by train then flights back to Cyprus.

You may also be able to get a package which will supply you with the flights and cruise. Why not try Portland Holidays, Thomson Holidays, My Travel, First Choice who are all UK tour operators with package holidays to Egypt.

But, if you take the cruise - you will have already paid for the excursions to visit temples and monuments so, you could pick and choose which ones you want to go to see and those you don't. The excursions only last 2 - 3hrs at maximum so why not try them and see???

If you base yourself in Luxor then you can visit many temples and tombs, Valley of Kings, Queens, Karnak and Luxor temples and more. You can plan a trip to Cairo for a day to see the Pyramids etc. If you look at Egyptair's website before you come then you should be able to get a really cheap flight price Luxor to Cairo online. They will send you an E-ticket. You could then organise a guide to meet you in Cairo. From Luxor you may also want to do a short cruise to Aswan, minimum 3 nights, I beleive. Return to Luxor by train or by road. It's cheaper to book the cruise and any tours from local agents rather than with your tour rep. Some friends recommended a website on another travel forum but don't think I can plug that site here. PM me if you wish.

How big is Luxor, cos I was wounding if one could go around the city and temples by yourselfs? I don't like being hand lead around. Also is there anyway of getting a job out there, like digs. I just want to get way from the UK and a friend said I should try getting a job on some kind of dig ??? :?:

Mr Sherif (the agent there) offers land based tours plus you can join with like minded people and travel as a group if you wish. You just need to arrange your own flights to meet up with the tour.... Egyptair have some very cheap internal flights on their website.

We used Mr Sherif to arrange part of our independent holiday and he was superb. Everything ran like clockwork for us.
