Hello.
I've just booked for 2 weeks at the Estrela do Vau in Praia do Vau. Online reviews indicate that it is a nice (4 star) apartment complex and as there are just 2 of us it was about the only place I could find in the Algarve not charging a huge under occupancy supplement!
Anyway, I gather that it is located between Alvor and Praia da Rocha. I like to do a bit of exploring during the day and definitely go out for meals in the evening, so I expect we will be visiting these other areas quite a lot and maybe going further afield. The official write up suggests using Taxis. I would be grateful if anyone can tell me:
1) Are there any reasonable bars or restaurants in Praia do Vau?
2) How long it actually takes to walk to Alvor or Praia da Rocha?
3) Is there a local bus service through Praia do Vau and if so is it frequent etc?
4) How much does it actually cost in a Taxi?
5) I see that car hire often gets recommended on here for the Algarve. I won't be driving in the evening as I will want to sample some Portuguese beer & wine , but how much does car hire cost to arrange locally? http://www.economycarhire.com gets some positive recommendations, although I would prefer to suss things out when I get there rather than book in advance. Unless someone can convince me that a having a car for (say) a week will prove really useful.
Thank you in advance for any help.
hi smiles, have just got back from praia da rocha and we walked into praia du vau, it took us about 20 mins, i would say you'd have to get a taxi into alvor, which only took about 10-15 mins from rocha and was 5 euros, the beach at vau is beautiful, and not very crowded, but its a lovely walk along the beach to rocha, good resturant in rocha is claire's, does a real mix of cuisine and very reasonable, the weather is fab at the moment too. hope this helps.
I'm glad that the beach and weather are good - that will certainly please my girlfriend!
Looking on the (not very detailed) map I have, it appears that Praia do Vau is closer to Alvor than to Praia da Rocha. Is that not the case?
Also, do you kow how far it is to Portimao? As far as I can tell it appears to be just inland from Praia do Vau, so is also hopefully within exploring distance.
I'm still trying to weigh up whther car rental wil lbe necessary or not. It's only just over a week till we go
Cheers
We walked into both Alvor and Praia da Rocha a couple of times; although I would say you do need to be reasonably fit to do this. Restaurants seemed to be better value in Praia da Rocha, although the beer for 1 Euro at the Patrimonia in Praia do Vau during their "al day happy hour" came in handy whilst watching the football.
Cheers.
Just to say it is easier to walk into Rocha than Alvor.Rocha will take about 20 mins Alvor about 40 mins on the road 2 hrs over cliffs
