It is cheaper, but you have to be very careful, you don't need a prescription, as long as you have the name of the tablets, but last year, I gave my prescription to the pharmacist, and the tablets I was given, were not the pain killers I wanted, they were VALIUM, there is a posting on here all about it somewhere I will try to find it for you.

I havent got a clue of how to put a link up, but if you put medication into the search for the Goa forum you will find it.

Thank you both, just searched and found the info.

Gayle, I'm really sorry to hear of your experience re driving and it has certainly opened my eyes to be careful with medication out there.

Thanks again.

I personally found that I could not beat the price of my prescription drugs although my authority has effectively doubled the price of my tablets by only letting me have one month supply per prescription so I will ask again this year.

What is very cheap are the non-prescription ones - particularly things like nurofen and diarrhoea.

I suffer from heartburn after a few too many alcoholic drinks, does Goa have anything similar to Gaviscon or just as effective?
or should i take my own? I dont like the tablet forms, ie rennies

I also suffer from heartburn, especially with spicy food and alcohol, I got some sachet's of Eno's in the elephant shop about 4 years ago and they do the trick for me, always buy a supply when I get there.

I've always used Zantac in the UK. They sell them in Goa and are really inexpensive. They are tablet form but unlike Rennies, you swallow them whole. Might be worth a try.. Best thing is to go into the chemist in Goa and tell them the problem and let them suggest things for you to take. :D

Thanks John-doe, gaviscon is quite expensive, i get through nearly 2 big bottles a week and i dont get free perscriptions so its a pain in the backside.

Thanks Dribyar, when im in Goa in Jan ill pop into a chemist :)

hi
best thing for heartburn is ranitidine(zantac) or something like omeprazole (losec). heartburn tablets (tend to be the chewable type, loads of brands like rapid eeze etc) and liquids like gaviscon are really only for short term use as some of the ingredients in them can cause other probs in the long term. i never have any heartburn probs at home but always get it bad when on holiday ( & i dont just think its the spicy food - maybe something to do with the frequency of alcohol consumed as well  )
i always put myself on ranitidine 75mg twice a day whilst away overindulging & never have a problem now. can buy over there much cheaper than here. but be aware as with all medications some have side effects and can interact with other meds you may be on, if taking something like ranitidine for the first time it is a good idea to have a chat with the pharmacist first.

I am still using the Zantac I bought in Goa last Christman 100 rupees for 100 tablets, will be buying more when we go back this year (14th December for 1 month)

We always bring back the Indian version of Zantac which is called Zinetac, they cost 4.74 rupees for 10 tablets 150mg. Be careful though they are double the dose of UK ones. You can only buy 75mg in the chemist here. They certainly do the trick though, 15 minutes and all your heartburn disappears like magic!

I don't want to be pedantic but if you suffer so much, why don't you alter you diet?

This question from a bloke that eats raw rhubarb and baking apples for pudding and never had indigestion.
Reply
Lezlie, if you can eat those things and you've never had heartburn. I'd count yourself very lucky
I've tried to adapt my food to avoid heartburn but the heartburn then adapts to the new food....very frustrating :x
