Hi - just back from 2 weeks in Menorca 20th June to 4th July, staying at Son Bou & Tirant. The weather was brilliant, really hot. This is our 6th visit to Menorca and we couldn't get over the price rise in food, as it seems to have gone up so much since last year. While I know people need to make their money in the summer months, we felt the cost of food to be just too much. Examples, in euros: Loaf of bread, 2.10 or 3.45 - carton of milk 2.90! We went to buy some cakes, but they were so expensive we didn't bother. Fruit was the same - in fact everything was so costly. The only thing that was cheap was tomatoes (fresh & tinned), eggs (1.05 for 6) & fresh carrots. We did however find the food cheaper at the large supermarkets in Mahon but not everyone has a car. Even the prices of other goods seemed to have soared too, children's inflatables being almost double what you pay in England. I love the island, but found the rise in the cost of living quite a shock.
We had a lovely week at Son Bou, staying at villa Juanita. The evening shows at San Jaime were excellent. The second week we went to the other side of the Island at stayed at, Blue Island Sun apartment at Tirant. It was ideal for a couple though very quiet and wouldn't recommend for children - hope to add reviews later.
A few weeks before we went (all costs had been paid) we had a further bill for just over £30 saying that because of how the euro now was we had to pay this extra cost! This was for the villa booked with Solmar Villas, yet no extra cost was charged by Blue Island Sun apartment. Has anyone else had this extra cost added to their holiday?
Taxi from Mahon airport to Son Bou was 28 euros which we thought was reasonable.
The euro was 1.22 at Cala en Bosc & 1.17 at Arenal.
I would be furious if i had already paid for holiday then they turn round and say coz the euro is stonger we want more of your hard earned cash!!. Hope this didnt spoil your time on this lovely island. Roll on sept two weeks in son bou !!!
Regarding the price of food trust me you have been ripped off, can I ask did you go to the on site shops at your apartments when you shopped as you will always pay over the odds.
I live in Menorca and we do not get the same wages as in England so food has to be resonable for us to eat and I buy fresh every day and can spend anywhere between 4 euros to 20 if I need cleaning stuff ect for the house and this includes fresh meat!!!
Eating out does not have to cost the earth for example if you go to one of the restaurants in Fornells you can get a 4 course meal for only 7.50 per person which is very popular indeed. The only thing is you have to ask for it in most places and trust me that is what us locals do!!
Tink x
So sorry you found things so expensive. Arrived home yesterday from 2 weeks in Cala'n Bosch and was pleasantly surprised that prices in shops and restaurants had got noticeably gone up since last year. Just worked out we spent just £100 more than last year (including 20e at chemist for mozzy bites!). We were careful to buy at cheaper supermarkets (big one in Cuitadella especially) and ate in for breakfast and lunch but did not skimp on evening spending on meals, ice creams, drinks, games and rides etc. Already looking at next year.
How much can I expect to pay in C&B for lets say a pint of international lager or Magners and spirit and mixer and a soft drink?
Also any recomendations on restuarants to eat would be much appreciated
Thanks
3 wks today until take off
Can someone let me know the name and location of the large supermarket in Ciutadella? Thanks.
