According to a Post Office survey (not too scientific by the way) Portugal is of the cheapest destinations in the EEC.

I've just recently come back and evening meals (two or three course and coffee) with the odd drink were coming out between 25-40 euros for both of us. Certainly cheaper than the UK.

Do you know the average cost of say a beer, coke, sandwich? What sort of things did you have in your meal?

Toasted sandwich...about 2 or 3 euros

Large beer 2 to 3 euros in restaurant...I wasn't hunting about for cheapest place so maybe it can be found cheaper.

Most of our evening meals were Portuguese...Chicken Piri-Piri, various fish dishes.

Saw many adverts for all you could eat Chinese restaurants for 8 to nine euros.

Depends where you go, the more touristy (ie with English names) and/or the nearer the beach the more you will pay.

My examples - in locals bars a large beer (40cl or 2/3rd a pint) generally 2 Euros. I know an English run bar or two where a full pint is €2. These are for local beers of course; imported eg Carlsberg, Tetley's at least €3 ie 50% more.

Soft drinks eg Coke often cost more than beer and in bottles or cans only.

Toasted sandwich more like €1.50 where I go.

Decent set menu type meal in a small cafe/bar/restaurant need not cost more than €6 or €7 and usually includes a drink eg small beer or glass of wine. Even in the middle of Albufeira you won't usually pay much more for similar.

And yes I have been to a chinese with a help yourself eat as much as you want menu for €9.95 all you pay for is drinks. It was packed!

Should add to Cubsurs comments that in the Happy House chinese drinks are not priced higher to make up for the cheap food, still very reasonable!

I'm going to Lagos in a few weeks time so will let you know whar I find there. I would imagine in tourist resorts where there is lots of competition you will find a variety of price ranges from cheap to dear.

Most of the feedback we get on here impies it is one of the more reasonable countrys to holiday in.

The weather will probably be better in the Algarve in Sept than it will be here as well.

Any idea of how much a pint of guinness is?

Anywhere between 5 and 7 euros a pint generally.

Toasties/sandwiches varied from 2-3.50 euros, large beer from 1.5 to 3.20.

Just back on saturday and ate a few times at lunchtime in Silk on the strip, large beer 1.5 euros. " toasties, large homemade cips and 4 large beers for 14 euros.

I found this time that food prices were pretty much the same everywhere but the drinks were dearer in the more touristy places. They were doing full breakfasts in some places for 2 euros!
