On taxi fares, we were staying in Siolim, so we would get a taxi into Baga sometimes. We had a regular taxi driver from Siolim who we would use when we could and when we asked how much, he said 15rps per km. We would give him 200rps one way. When we tried to get one back, we were quoted anything up to 600!! We decided to pay no more than 300 back, and we always got someone to take us. Another time when in Arpora, we were walking on the way to the bridge and we wanted to be taken down snake rd to Baga, which is about 2km at the most. 100 - 150 rps was quoted, but again we didn't pay more than 50rps. When we challenged one guy why his prices were not 15rps per km as was on his windscreen, he said they don't use the meter prices because they often charge less for the airport runs, what a load of garbage. Greed is the heart of nearly everything now.

On the vexed subject of taxis, a couple of points.
I was told a couple of seasons ago, that the person in charge of issuing the Tourist Taxi licenses, for whatever reason, issued many more than was required, the figure quoted to me was at the finish there was 32,000 licenses on the road, which is about four times the visitors there, at any one time. Another factor is that the vast majority of taxi drivers are simply driving for someone else, a case in point, the place we used to stay in, at the bottom of Holiday Rd. in Canlangute had two taxis attached to it, owned by the owners of the accomodation. They upped the price of their rooms massivley last year with the effect that most of their regular guests went elsewhere. Their solution to the loss of business was to buy another taxi to make up the shortfall!. I'd occasion to make two return visits to Mapsa in one day last month, when I asked the driver, who I know well, what he'd been told to ask by the owners for this journey he shamefacedly told me 500rps. per journey. Needless to say it was the last time I used their taxis.
A lot of the people in Goa have the rather simplistic idea in business , that when times get hard, all you need to do is up your prices for everything, and the well off visitors will happily cough up. I think just now, and likely next season, they are in for a nasty shock, as this business plan is found to be the reverse of what is required in times of decreasing customers and added competition. After 3 or 4 visits to Goa I realised this, they don't seem to have any concept of how business is done. This surprises me as most of the Indian people in this country excel when it comes to doing GOOD business and getting REPEAT sales/clients. Still.... only time will tell and it's showing in a short space of time that they are doing so much so wrong. When in a hole stop digging!!

Ok so in relation to a taxi what should we paying for a tuk tuk.

If its 150 say to candolim from arpora in a cab then what would it be in a tuk tuk

Is it half the price two thirds or what ?

First day in goa pretty sure we paid 400 one way to vagator from md and then only 200 back with a vagator cab. :think

We paid 300 to Vagator from Calangute after much bartering, was the Vagator taxi an old Lada ? Babu the owner is a lovely guy and he has had that taxi for years

No andy just a normal run of the mill cab.
Think all the vagator cabs were only charging 200 back to md

Just shows the diff u can pay
Double the price from outside MD
The old addage is once bit twice shy

Never see the logic in overcharging
A fair price on the meter = lots of repeat custom, its not rocket science

Roll on the 6th march

Yes the price will be above half but no more than two thirds, we often use to get a tuk tuk back to the Md at the end of the night,

The Md has a list of set prices that should be charged by the taxis outside if you ask they will show you it used to kept on the reception counter or sometimes under it & they will even copy it for you.

Hi, I'me new here and not sure if its okay to post, it my first post, tho i've been lurking for some time, then got rid of the butterflies and joined up. I'm just back from Goa and discovered that the taxi prices are high and yet, restaurants and handi-crafts shops pay the taxi drivers a commission to take customers there. Perhaps, that's also why prices in the restaurants and hand-craft shops are high?
