I got back last week Monday but this hotel is not in the review section, so I thought I'd enlighten you all about the place.
Karawan hotel is situated on Boujafaar in Sousse centre, which is right across the road from the beach and the big plage area where many tunisians like to sit. Kind of like a long promenade.
We booked half board. Got to the hotel at 3am, filled out the landing card and was then taken to our room. The hotel is suitable for disabled people as it has ramps and lifts. The place where disabled people would have difficulty accessing is the downstairs area with beauty therapies and internet access.
We stayed in room 323. Inside the room as a wardrobe, TV, 3 single beds, a nice bathroom with bath, shower and a large balcony terrace with chairs and table. If booking a room, request the pool view area as the front of the hotel faces a busy street. If facing the pool area you will also have some beach view if on 3rd floor upwards. The downside to the room was no fridge, no hairdryer and no working telephone inside the room. The maid cleaned the rooms daily and changed towels daily.
Breakfast was excellent, cereals, yoghurts (excellent strawberry yoghurt, best I've had in my life); fruits, jams, meats, eggs, pancakes on demand, sausages, salads, cakes, breads, everything. After eating I often had to go back to my hotel room to sleep it off for 2 hours. Had dinner twice, food was satisfactory but never cold. Also chef is oncall to provide you with freshly heated pasta and sauces cooked infront of you. There was no formal seating, once you entered the restaurant you were free to sit wherever you wish. Also there were juices, tea and coffee available at breakfast. In the evening the waiter takes long to bring drinks and alcohol because they get these from the bar downstairs.
There is a bar near the entertainment area downstairs and they provide alcohol and the entertainment is downstairs also. there is often music and animation starting around 10pm. Many tunisians visit the bar in the evening because the prices aren't too bad. Celtia beer cost 2TND per bottle, 1 bottle of white wine 12TND.
Other things at the hotel were a man selling trips (quadding, camel riding, etc), internet cafe, beauty treatment and gymnasium, kids club, night club, 2nd restaurant by pool.
Karawan is a short walk to the medina (around 10-15 minutes), metro station (to Monastir and Mahdia), train station and big taxi/louage rank. There are cheap restaurants located on the road of the hotel (adjacent to the beach, think it's called Corniche.
I'd definetely return to this hotel. At £92.00 for 2 people HB and the prime location it was a bargain. It's a 3 star rated hotel and the waiters and reception staff were pleasant and helpful. Not many British tourists, although I saw a few. Mainly Germans, Polish and Eastern European.
