When my daughter went to Italy last year with school we got cover for all the family, and they automatically sent out the new cards which took over the E111 forms, my problem is we are also taking my husbands daughter who lives with her mum not us!!!
We go on the 16th april, do i need a card for her even tho we have insurance, if so will i have to get her mum to apply for one, and will it be here intime?????

Hi Michelle,
As long as the person is over 16 they can apply for the E111 card. And if you apply online, following the link from this site, you should"nt have a problem timewise either. When we applied online we had the cards inside a week.

Everyone who is travelling in your party needs the new EHIC card regardless of their age. Don't worry you have plenty of time, you can apply on-line and should receive your cards within a few days of your application.

The E111 card is not mandatory but should provide free state provided medical care if you have one. It would make sense for everyone to have one.
From my experience you need to make the medical staff aware that you wish to have medical care under the E111 system and show your card else they may assume you will be either paying or claiming on your insurance.
A couple of years ago I had to get urgent medical treatment for my grandson during the night and it was assumed that it would be progressed as an insurance claim although I had the necessary E111 paperwork - from then I assumed nothing regarding medical care overseas.
