Hi sj, Glad you had a good time. We have just returned from 2 weeks in Italy we had a day trip to Venice on the last Saturday and Splendour was in port. I was so excited! We were going to hire a tux for hubby to save on luggage allowance but he has just bought a lovely dark grey suit for a wedding in August so we may just take that as it is a very lightweight wool. Did you do the ships tours or DIY? We havn`t booked any tours because I have a problem getting on the bus but I have now got myself a little portable step so I was able, with help, to use the bus in Italy.

Hello jax,
Your hubby's suit will be fine. I saw very few in tuxes. My hubby wore black suit with white shirt and dickie bow, but not many did. There were various colours of suits/shirts and ties.
I don't know what ports you will be stopping at but we did not do the tours as we had checked and seemed to be able to do diy quite easily where we stopped.
We went to Split, Athens and Mykonons. Varying inaccurate information was given out by both ship and locals. We were told that Paradise Beach in Mykonos took half an hour bus ride and cost 40E a sunbed! We ended up at a local beach- 20 min walk- where there was a local tavern and if you used it sunbeds were free. It turned out that Paradise Beach was only a 5 min bus ride and sunbeds around 6E! what a difference.
Similarly in Split- we knew there was a local beach-Becvice Beach- you can almost see it from were ship is tendered. But another couple were told it was too far and would need to get a bus and never ended up there. Also someone else wanted a tour to include beach but due to lack of demand it wan't run. From the town with Palace infront of you go right along port and there it is.
We did Athens on our own by metro which is cheap and easy- albeit my hubby had wallet stolen! There is no water to buy inside Acropolis only water fountains- but everyone used them to no ill effects. It is quite slippery- there is a lot of marble to walk on and a fair few steps, it is also extremely hot! Mykonos is beautiful and easy to walk around then end up at the beach, but you can do Delos - we didn't, had enough of history and ancient sites by then, the heat was also too much to walk around in for too long.
Any other questions feel free to ask.

Thanks for that sj. Thats really helpful. I have a question about your visit to Athens. I use a small fold up wheelchair to get around as I can only walk short distances. I wondered how acccessible is the train to Athens. Are there any steps at the station (either end) and do you think there is room for my chair on the train? We are doing the same itinary as you. I am a bit dissapointed to find that Split is a tendered port. When we booked it we were told that all the ports on this itinary were all docked. The day in Split is actually our wedding anniversary. I am reassured, a little, that they do offer a great deal of help to disabled passengers using the tender but that it depends on how rough the sea is on the day. So it`s fingers crossed I can get off! :)

Jax, re Athens, we walked from ship to station. We were docked far end of port and it was a long walk, a lot longer than reports I had read, so maybe they were docked nearer. I can't remember too many steps at the station, but I think there were a few shallow ones!. The train is like our underground ones only you don't go underground for the stops to the Acropolis and they are a lot cleaner. Be warned there are numerous steps at the Acropolis and they are marble. The heat makes them quite slippery.
Split- ours was tender but maybe yours wont be. We didn't see any problems. They used the lifeboats off the ship. I would think that if the sea is too rough for you the tender would also affect everyone generally. In Split there are steps down into the Diocletians Palace which is directly infront of the port. However if I remember rightly there are other entrances/exits around the palace where there are no steps. There are also steps to get into the Cathedral- considered the oldest in the world!

Thanks sj, We have just received our pre-cruise excursion brochure and have decided to take the Panoramic Athens trip. Its a 3hour bus trip in the afternoon round all the major sites of interest with no walking involved. The bus stops for photo opportunities and its only around £20 so I think this is the best option for us.
