Thanks sliema2 for the list. I cant't make up my mind whether to go to St Helens b'kara or stella maris. I have been to St. Helens for the last two years, what a great feast that is. Bruilliant fireworks set in a lovely old village.

As I work in a school I can't get to my favorite feast ,L-Lmnarja, I have only managed to get there once and much fun was had by all.

Hi Alan, as they are both being held over the same weekend you could spend time at each of them, don't forget that Birkirkara is only 15-20 mins or so from Sliema.

Well what a lucky boy I am, I will be in Sliema on the 2nd of July and in Gzira on the 9th of July as well so I don't even have to go far to see two of them, yipeeeeeeeee. Good topic Sliea2.

Hello again, I would like to offer a word of warning when going to one of these Festa's. In July we went to the Sliema one, held in the main street by the ferries. We stode by the band stand and as they set of the first set of fireworks they looked so good as they went strait up in the dark night sky, but what we and all the other people and the band did not know was that they came strait back down again, you have never seen so many people run for there lives as they landed in the band stand and the street still on fire. So just watch where you stand

That sounds absolutely horrendous! :yikes

Can I recommend going to a Festa where the fireworks are let off from a barge situated offshore? Much safer! During July there was such a barge in Balluta Bay (we had a great view from the apartment) for the Festa there. I am sure there are several others that do it this way too.

I disagree with you Susan, we have been to festas in Balluta where the fireworks are fired from a barge in the bay and it made no difference at all, there was all sorts of flaming debris showering down on to Tower Road all over people and buildings, it's not where they are fired from but the trajectory they are fired at, the best rule of thumb to apply is very simple, what goes up must come down  .

I would have to say that you were very unlucky/it was very windy or the position of the barge has been changed to deal with this problem this year.

Nope It was a lovely still summers night and judging by the Sliema webcam the barge seems in an almost identical place to last time as it has to be for nautical purposes of course.

Hi Susan, oddly enough I can tell the difference between Balluta and Marsamxett 8) , early this week the barge could be seen in Balluta bay on the Linguatime webcam, and this was confirmed to me by a friend in Kappara who drives past it every day, it has obviously been towed away.

Here is the link to said webcam, very good for watching feasts in the Sliema Tower Road / Ballutta / San Giljan areas http://www.linguatime.com/

What I was saying was that the barge was far enough out in the harbour this year so that the fireworks did NOT fall onto the streets. I know this because I sat and watched 2 lots of Festa fireworks being set off from the barge, none of them landed in the streets.

Therefore it is reasonable to assume that a display from an offshore barge may be safer if it is moored an adequate distance from the shore!

Ciao

This has been a major health and safety issue in Malta for as long as I can remember, it's about time that regulations are being tightened up as to many families have been bereaved because of pyrotechnics, that is why they build fireworks factories in the countryside, in fact if I remember correctly one blew up on the outskirts of Siggiewi last year killing at least one person that I know of.

Well I have to say that as a chemist what worries me most is that all those pretty firework colours are brought to you by courtesy of the transition metal elements which have in many cases been proved to be toxic. eg lead is such a metal and can produce a very pale blue colour flame, but as most people know this metal, or should I say its ions, are toxic

In any research lab, folks are more than careful when handling some of the compounds containing these metals because of the slow build up poisoning effect they have. Some colleagues I know refuse to eat mussels and other filter feeding molluscs because they actually concentrate these 'heavy' metals in their body! Who knows what effect breathing the firework smoke too much may have on your long term health.

Sorry to put a damper on things but I like watching the festa fireworks and I shall still go to see them. I suppose some relatively low level exposure can't do too much harm since we probably are exposed to some levels in our diet anyway?

Hi Trev,

Now I think about it, maybe having the spent fireworks fall into the sea isn't such a good idea after all! Do you think that there are enough chemicals left to cause harm to marine life?

I don't think the casings are collected either and that must cause a few problems too. It's funny that something so enjoyable can have such dire consequences and we don't even tend to consider them at all. Human nature I suppose.

Ok Folks

As this has now gone totally off topic and caused friction, I am going to lock it.

Can I please remind all who post in the Malta forum to keep it friendly and observed the T&C of the site at all times

Thank you
