Like yourself I've visited Tenerife on numerous occasions over the last 12 years and actually love the place..I might even still buy a place there one day..My own view however is that the euro has killed it as a growing tourist destination..There are far cheaper places to visit now although accepted they do not have year round sunshine...There is very little incentive in my opinion to visit Tenerife now in the summer months for a holiday ..but there again its only my opinion

My personal opinion would be to go for it. Like yourself we have visited Tenerife many times on a regular basis, for over twenty years in fact. For the last five years we have been considering a move there, more seriously for the last two. On our last visit over christmas and new year we found the property we have been looking for and are planning to make a permanent move in July. Like the previous post says the Euro has done its damage there but it is still a very popular year round destination for people of all ages. I have had all the normal comments regarding my move, from 'Good on yer, hope everthing works out for you' to ' It's very hard to adjust to living in a foreign country and may not be all you think it will'; the second comments have come from people who have in fact moved abroad and are still there Regardless of other peoples comments we are still going for it. I hope with all my heart it works out for us and our children, if it does not and we at some time in the future return to the UK at least I will not spend the rest of my life thinking 'If only....
You only get one go at life and this is it, so make the most of it and follow your dreams.

Rather than decline I think the islands main resorts are in a period of transition.

It is attempting to change and redevelop to face the situation it finds itself in now that the new markets of say Turkey Bulgaria Egypt Tunisia and even the former Yugoslavian resorts that are emerging.

In my opinion this may take a few years to complete and during this transition period it may well be that it loses its former position has a front runner.

Having said that I think they are tackling the problems rather than sticking their heads in the sand. There is a massive amount of improvements ongoing in Los Cristianos at the moment which will last at least the next 12 months with the inevitable knock on in the number of visitors this year.

But when these improvements are complete the resort will certainly be in a good position to compete and with the edge of a full 12 momth season it will always offer a very good alternative with a fully developed infrastructure and a warm and friendly atmosphere.

Thanks for the replies guys - our own feelings are go for it, like you said Jackie we only have one life, it's not a dress rehearsal.

We just feel that the time is right, we have 3 kids but the first 2 now have houses of their own and the last 1 has 1 year left at uni but is in America at the moment!

I too feel that Tenerife is in a period of improvement, it may take a few years but whatever happens it is a beautiful island and nobody can take that away. We are not going to make our fortune only a living hopefully!

Will keep you posted the way things progress - any other advice or comments greatly appreciated

Take a look at Palm Mar if you get chance, still being developed but will be a wonderful place to live when finished, And plenty of room for a few more bars to open.

We first visited Tenerife four years ago and stayed at all the main areas to "test" them out, then 2 years ago we bought an apartment in Silencio.

During this time we have seen many bars come and go at an alarming rate of turn over whilst those that do keep going only a few make a "living" and to do that the people who run them appear to work all the hours God sends.

Sorry to be a bit glum but just want to make sure that any one thinking of running a bar anywhere in Tenerife (Or elsewhere for that matter) should think hard and long with lots of research before making a decision to take the plunge!

We have spent a few years researching a move and are close to coming ovr for good........ sometimes you have to take a step back and look at what the situation you live in is like....... I don't care what our perma spin MPs have you believe, we are in a mini recession in the UK - business is getting harder and harder.... as a country we have never been more at risk since WWII, crime is on the up, the pace of life is getting more and more demanding and stressful.... so Tenerif emay not be THE place to go.... but it IS still very busy and for 12 months at that. Look at the reasons for moving, safer environment, relaxed way of life, better healthier weather.... all you need to do is have the coinfidence in your own ability to run a successful bar and what is stopping you !! You only have 1 life.... look at how many people in your life you know have had tragedy.... wouldn't they like a second chance..... you don't get it - only first chances.... Go For it !!

We are definately on the same wavelength. We have been thinking about moving permanently to Tenerife for the last five years, after visiting the island at least twice a year for the last 23 years. When we were over there at Christmas our agent who we have had for two years finally found us our dream house. Paid our deposit in January and are now in the process of selling up in the UK to make the permanent move. The main reason we are moving is to give our kids a better future cos they sure as hell ain't got one here. My husband is a self employed electrician and he will carry on working in the UK for a while due to some good contracts he has that are affording us the move. He will visit the Island regularly in the hope of building up an electrical business over there. We have already got a few contacts over there regarding work from a very good Canarian friend we have made over the years who owns a restaurant.
