If the RP has got to be dismantled/wrecked, won't this cause a reasonable amount of pollution with all the rusted structure. Presumably a lot of rubbish (rust) will be washed away. Would be tragic if by dismantling it opened another 'can of worms'.
The country isn't exactly great at tidying up their rubbish as most have noticed.
Anyone any thoughts?
As I've said before, scrapping where it is, has been the end game for the owners all along, hence six years of dragging their feet, stalling through the courts etc. When a ship grounds. speed of removal is essential and from where she is sitting, Smitt or any of the recognised salvors, would have had her off easily, but vested interests did'nt want that. If she does break up and has to be salvaged where she is, it will be a disaster for the surrounding beaches, but I should'nt think that will bother the mining interests one little bit ( nor the big hotel owners in S.Goa) Alan
I know nothing of the technicalities about shifting large hulks of rusting metal but I remember talking to someone on an 'Environmental Committee' in Goa. He was saying that it would be a disaster for the Aguada - Candolim beach area if it broke up while dismantling due to the state of the metal. Needlessly to say he was ridiculed (by those with invested interests in that area).
Maybe the Indian government know the real problems but don't want to own up!
Does anybody have any further news on The River Princess???
So maybe the guy in charge of salvage was right, and they will start again after the monsoons ? wait and see...
we went to goa in 2005 staying in candolim. there was a tanker on the beach where we stayed and wondered if it's still there? as they were talking about it being floated and removed then (and possibly long before then!!)
is it still there
footy
Yup !! - still there, another thread on here for you to follow.
Whats the latest news on The River Princess...it seems to have gone all quiet for the moment !!!
I think they are sticking to the plan that I was originally told by the guy in charge of the removal - that they will start again early September. I would guess that it will be there for all of next season
1 George Bush to open his mouth without garbage spilling out
2. Prince William to marry Paris Hilton
3. Blackpool FC to win the FA Cup
4. Tony Blair to be the last one out of the Big Brother House
5. River Princess to be gone by next season.
My money's on Tony!
had a ride too the beach thismorning and
Hi Lez
Apparently the removal has come to a standstill again. They found alot of oil at the bottom of the ship so it's staying for now.
don't tell me I'm actually going to see this with my own eyes??
The River Princess is going to be classified as a site of historical interest soon. Then they can charge 100 rps a photo.
then I woke up.
took a ride down there this morning and she is still there no body working on her all on her own being battered by large waves
Fi you will get to see the hulk the rusting hulk that is for years to come
Thought you'd gone into hibernation Lez! Good to see our man on the ground is still being active. Bet it's as wet here as there at present. Enjoy the monsoon and catch up with you early November after my expedition to Nepal
