You can catch a train from Salou to Tarragona. From Tarragona you can get trains every half hour to sitges. I think it's called the 'Regional express', just check.

ah! the timetable must just show the first and last train then! I (stupidly) thought there was only one at 5.52am and then nothing else until the last one at night. Penny has finally dropped.

only thing the website doesnt say is how frequently they run but as you say if its every half an hour thats great and guess I can pick up a full timetable in resort.

I don't know about the buses, but the trains are cheap and comfortable. Your problem is that you are going from one region to the next (Barcelona to Tarragona), which means that there are currently no direct trains (not that I could find, anyway).

Travelling from Sitges, you will have to change trains at either Vilanova i la Geltru or Sant Vicenc de Calders. The latter gives you more options and I know that Vilanova has a very confusing station.

The renfe.es site (which gives some limited pages in English, find the little union flag) has an additional option: Cercanias - find the tab halfway down the page and select Barcelona when it asks. The current trains from Sitges to Sant Vicenc de Calders go almost every half hour on 06 and 36 from 07:06 to 00:06. Take the platform marked with the Green 'C2' banner at Sitges, and make sure your train is going in the right direction, i.e. not Barcelona. It takes 26 minutes.

The trains from Sant Vic to Salou are a bit more infrequent. You need to get back to the main renfe.es site and type 'San' in the station selection box, select Sant Vicenc de Calders and then 'Salou' when it asks you the destination. At the moment, the following times are listed (until early June 07):

06:48, 08:48, 10:12, 11:47, 14:16, 15:47, 17:16, 18:48, 20:12, 21:47.

This second part will take around 45 minutes, the return journey will cost around 10 euros. If you can get to the results page on the site, it gives train types such as 'Catalunya Express' and 'Regional Express'. Click on this name and it shows all station stops (with times) and the ultimate destination, which will be posted on the front of the train. The scrolling display in the train shows the next station stop only once the train has started moving... very helpful. The website results pages also have the return journey option at the bottom on the page.

One complication is that the new Ave train works at Barcelona are causing some train cancellations and delays on certain days- I was travelling 12/05/07 and one of my trains from Tarragona was cancelled (but the next one was only 10 minutes later).

I'll keep looking and see if I can find any that change at Tarragona because it's a nice station with good displays.

Edit: One train at 20:35. The summer timetable might be better - when are you travelling?
