We went twice in 2 years and like going out to the town. It is a bit of a walk but not too bad (say 15 - 20 mins slow stroll), the promenade is ok and buses run frequently if you can't face the walk. We never used taxis but I guess they would be cheap enough.
I'm just looking at going again, next May, so it certainly hasn't put me off.
We also never went to Cambrils which I think may be closer, but not as lively.
