Quite agree with you re over-indulgence but travellers diarrhea is caused by contamination especially in underdeveloped countries. I was in the catering industry for many years and had to teach people about food prep etc so understand the reasons for food poisoning and still say that Goa is not as hygienic as is could or should be.
On of the best examples of how things should be can be found at Soumyen's restaurant on the Calangute/Candolim border opposite the Hindu Temple. Soumyen used to be the chef at after 7.

I think squigs has a point, it is a known fact that a change in eating and drinking habits, then letting it all ferment in the sun, will result in the tummy rebelling. Too much alcohol can cause diarrhea.
I am not saying that there arn't any cases of food poisoning etc, but a lot of problems are caused bty over indulgence
x lassi
ps- my tip is drink some lassi every day.

Quite agree Narial. I too have been until recently in the catering industry and have advanced food hygiene qualification. Standards aren't what they should be in Goa but are improving over the years. My recommendation of a restaurant there, that is well run, is I95. I have actually been round their kitchen and spoken to the chefs.
Souymens is on my list of must places to eat on our next visit!!
Perhaps another good way to avoid stomach problems is to eat at places recommended by other H/Ters!!

i went to goa in march and i didnt get ill..
I made sure i drank pleanty of BOTTLED water and i took some things in a sachet that kept your body hydrated and kept all the minerals in (as i tend not to eat after the first few days)..
A relative of mine got it bad, Personally i think it was because he drank their beer, in little bits its fine, but drinking lots all of the time does generally make you ill..
Good luck && have a nice time!

I think that "Travellers Diahorrea" may be one thing but 'two ended' sickness is more like food poisoning to me. From experience I know the difference. I've eaten in places in villages where I thought 'this is going to be the place I get something'... and not, usually it can be the opposite where you get the dodgy 'western' meal in an upmarket resort.

Also Goa is a lot dirtier now than it was a few years back.

Neil I called it travellers diahorria because this is what it is commonly know as - not many people actually call it food poisoning - which it is. I recall your experiences which you wrote about last year - not very nice if I remember correctly.

Please don,t forget that swimming in the sea and getting just one mouth full of water can be just as bad as eating from a dodgy restaurant.
Anyone who has walked the beach from Baga to Candolim will have seen how "foamy" the sea is where there are more tourists, it doesn,t take a degree to work out why.

I have to say that all four of us have been going for many years and always drink the local beer daily and have never had any problems. The only times one of our family got bad, she had eaten salad, and left it too long before she went to the doctors. The longer you leave it, the more dehydrated you get and the longer it takes to get rid of. We found the Yellow bombs from the chemist great - but it's always best to go and see them as soon as you get ill.

The day I arrived I went straight to the chemist in Calangute to purchase tablets and rehydration sachets. Cost no more than a couple of quid.

I'd rather have the stuff ready than be caught short and have to go out shopping whilst suffering!!!!

it is also caused by drinking iced very cold drinks in the heat and spices particularly chillies, we are all different and all react differently, I have had friends get sick when we have all eaten the same meal!! personally we eat everywhere, love seafood, eat from bread man samosa boys on beach. stalls and touch wood!!!!!! :) i personally think many illnesses come from people not washing or cleansing their hands before eating (as in us the guests) this is one thing i am meticulous about and always carry wet wipes after all just think how many hands you shake and how dirty the money is :yikes my worst food poisonong was in Ibiza!!

We have a few friends that are 'beach sellers' we are always invited home for a meal when we are in goa. they have a little two room place where they mum, dad, kids, grandkids live. All the cooking is done outside, its one of those OMG situations, how do people live like this.
They always put on the most fantastic spread, including salad just for us, never ever had a problem, food is some of the best we have tasted.

Personal hygiene is a must and drink plenty of bottled water. :tongue

There is so much glycerine in the local beer, its enough to cause the 'tummy upset' if drinking in excess!! :duh

The sun well lets face it we aren't used to it ......!!? Well not if you live in the UK :bling
Which brings us back to the bottle of water to rehydrate.

Enjoy your holiday. jan x :sun2

Have been visiting Goa for the last 18 years, had very few deli belli, we eat in shacks, have a beer at lunch time etc. BUT last season I was really ill for a few weeks, went to the Bosnio Hospital in the end, and it turned out it was the Lassi which was upsetting me. I thought
I was starting the day with a healthy drink.

Only ever had the belly once, and believe me it's not just a quick case of the squirts!

But realisticly the chances of getting it are slim, take the same precautions at home, you know what your body can tolerate, drink only bottled water and my number one tip ......................................

forget it and enjoy yourself!
