I have to say that Singapore may just have priced itself out for us a frequent stopover point. We had already noticed the hotel prices had gone up quite alarmingly since we were last there two years ago and to be honest, Traders was not my first choice but we didn't want to pay any more.
Food and drink prices have rocketed. A small beer and a bacardi and coke can set you back almost £10. Hong Kong must even be cheaper now
Overall a days costs in Singapore probably was the equivalent of 4 or even 5 in Bali. Taxi prices are still very cheap though. I do love Singapore still but perhaps the two day stopover will become one.Singapore Airport is a joy. Well run, huge, every amenity you could think of including a swimming pool and free cinema. Great food outlets. You can be out of the airport half an hour after landing.
Our first evening we went to Lau Pa Sat to eat. It used to be a wet market and is a hawker centre with a great selection of food. It is huge white cast iron structure and looks impressive. The place was buzzing as it was busy with locals on their Saturday night out and there was a group playing. Fantastic food and cheap as all hawker food is. We then went on to take a taxi to Clarke Quay where we wandered around looking at all the changes that have been made( and wishing it was more like our first visit there)Still a great place to go for the evening- just take out a second mortgage
Most locals with buy a drink and also get a glass of water and will make a drink last for half the night The following day we just had the morning and went into Orchard Road where I wanted a designer watch. It was the second last day of the Singapore Sale so I was hoping for bargains. However, there was not a lot of evidence of the Sale in many places and I can began to come to the conclusion that I wouldn't get my bargain. Just at the last minute I saw exactly what I wanted.
I haven't been in the best of health in recent times and the morning exhausted me. There is no way I could have spent any longer in Orchard Road- the humidity drains the energy from you if nothing else.
We had had a big enough breakfast so we just returned to our hotel and had a drink there and relaxed for a little while at the poolside in the shade. We then repacked and were off to the airport for Bali( I had insisted this time that we hung up everything in the wardrobe as soon as we got there. From previous experience it is actually easier than rummaging through the cases looking for things all the time- and of course what you are looking for is always right at the bottom of the second case)
Will write about our second stopover there in my next post
But I don't really want to have to pay a fortune for a drink if I want one. The main gripe though was the actual hotel cost and also the daily costs there. For instance, we had a coke and a small beer by the pool side and THAT was almost £10( only realised the cost after we had ordered by the way). Laundry- I swear its gone up by 50% in 2 years- but in all fairness the hotel actually had its own launderette, and a iron and board in the room.
). If that is what turns people on, then fine, but I feel that you could be in almost any part of the world (except, possibly, for the different percentage ethnic mix of the patrons).
