We'd like to hire an apartment (min, 3 bed) in San Francisco for 2 weeks next August; if anyone has rented recently can they let me know which website/agency they used as I always prefer to go upon recommendations if possible.

Hi, have used http://www.vbro.com on a few occasions for various destinations in the US. These are rentals by owner, who may be renting them privately or through some sort of agency. Have not had any problems with them.

VRBO seems to be the biggest one, another one people use for Vegas is Jetliving, so they might be worth a look to see if they have anything for SF, evidently they tend to be a bit cheaper than VRBO (according to a review I read)

Another vote for VBRO - we used them for a house in Phoenix and had no problems. However as has been said, you are dealing direct with the owner of the property. VBRO is not an agency.
