Bad news for smokers
Although myself a smoker i do support the ban and believe this ban will help many people give up smoking

Thats great news, lets hope that it is implemented in the bars and restaurants 100%. Not like when i was in Spain this March, where it was being totaly ignored.

The article says that with exception of bars and restaurants in shopping malls, the law on bars restaurants will not come into force until 19th July 2009.

This law was being implemented in places in Antalya as early as january.

We have just come back from the Larespark hotel at Lara beach, which I believe is Turkey's first non-smoking hotel. There is no smoking at all inside the hotel, not even in the bedrooms (although you could smoke on the balcony).
There was also a notice at the smoking room at Antalya airport to say it was being removed on 19th May 2008 - so it certainly looks like the smoking ban is being implemented in Turkey after all.

I am going to altinkum tomorrow. Does anyone know if there is a ban on smoking there ?

Hi Sueo. The Turkish smoking ban was implemented Nationwide on May 19th.In saying that, nobody including the Police are taking a blind bit of notice.I have just come out of The Rover Garage in Antalya and it has no smoking signs all over.It also has Ash Trays on all the tables. Two Cops walked in and the first thing they did was to light fags. This is the second time in the last 5 years that the smoking ban has been introduced. It failed the first time and in my opinion will fail again.

the smoking ban should not be bad in turkey.
As most bars and restaurants are situated outside,
as i understand it is like our laws in england for enclosed spaces

I notice the newspaper article mentions boats. Would this be ferries or the boat trips we all love.

is this likely to be enforced , because for example to bars in olu deniz seem to be in a world of their own , is it really going to be non smoking

it makes me feel old all these things you cant do anymore !

i would not think that boat trips like lazy day, etc
would be included in ban hopefully someone who has been their this season will post reply,

It will make me happy if the restaurants in the hotels become completly non smoking. Nothing worse than eating with somebody's smoke drift in you face.

this came into force at the hemera the day after we left , i think it coincided with a special turkey day .im happy to see it banned in restaurants too.

Hi david
Was the ban just in the restaurants or other public areas of the hotel??

We stay at the Barut lara and are returning for xmas/new year and being the same chain as the hemera it will be great if they implement it there to! We were there in april and the hotel had the usual non smoking sides to the lobby bar and restaurants but the smoke still manages to get to you! A total ban in the resturants would be a great move forward!
