I appreciate that this view may not be popular with non smokers but although there are variations in the law among the UK countries in all of them smoking IS permitted in designated smoking rooms.
My husband has been a Coach Tour Driver for 30 years. He does not drink and after dinner goes to his room to relax watching TV or read up on attractions and sights for the next day for his commentary to his passengers.
He is away from home at least 45 weeks a year, at least from Monday to Friday but often home on a Friday night and away again Saturday to Saturday and then again away on the Monday. This past year he has been so unsettled and not being able to have a cigar
ette between going to his room at 7.30 and leaving the hotel the next morning. He sometimes phones me from the Coach Park at 6.30a.m.
I know non smokers will say give up but it is not easy and he reluctantly decided to give up his job (He was dedicated to giving a service to his passengers and has won awards for Coach Driver of the Year more than once)
Excuse the rambling but the point is: prisoners can smoke in their cells so why cant a hard working man relax in his own space with a smoke?
Hi Helen ... smoking ban legislation varies between individual UK nations. As you say, smoking is permitted in designated bedrooms. However, in Scotland for example, smoking rooms are discretionary rather than obligatory. Hoteliers have discretion under the legislation to provide smoking rooms if they wish, providing that any designated smoking rooms have a ventilation system which is not shared by or ventilates into any non-smoking part of the hotel. The legislation in Scotland also provides rights for staff who may have to work in designated smoking rooms.
