Hi all,
Booked a holiday to Point St gilles Benodet last year from an excellent description in a brochure. We are going to France for the first time -a family of three in our Trailier Tent.We have toured England on various Caravan Club sites and the facilities of the Showers and toilets have been superb. Lately i have seen reviews of the above site that have got us a bit worried. Can someone please hopefully dispel any fears or at least be truthful so as to be prepared! Any other views on the site would be appreciated
Thanks
Cant help you with your site, however as a last resort I can recommend the Site in Beg-Meil, L'Atlantique as it seem really good for campers and really poplar, clean very close to the beach, we were in the area last week benodet seemed nice, perfered concarneau.
We too have booked for Aug this year staying in a tent (one thats already there!!).What have you heard about this site that has put you off? Do you think I need to take anything to prepare for this??!!! Any info appreciated. Thanks D
We have also posted the question on the ukcampsite message board and everybody says that the site and resort itself is fantastic although there are some reservations. Firstly the toilet block which is near the pool is apparently disgusting because it is constantly being used, but other blocks are fine also if you have a pitch near the bar it can be quite noisy as it is open quite late.We are going in our own Trailer Tent and have got pitch I 1. If you go to the site website it shows you a plan of the site with pitch markings. The facilities, beach and resort of Benodet have come back as fantastic, so we are now very much looking forward to the holiday.
Hope this helps you in some way and if there are any more questions please do not hesitate to ask.
Tony
French campsites have been improving for some time now, and I think that the owners are aware of possible 'sensitive' areas, such as the toilet block. I can only suggest that you wear flip-flops or similar even when visiting the loo and 'keep a stiff upper lip'! You can of course choose to visit other blocks on the site a bit further from the pool ... but to be basic, at least the toilets are being used for their intended purpose rather than certain people peeing in the pool! (Not nice, but it does happen!)
As for the bar noise, this can be a problem in any resort. However the French have a law called tappage nocturne, which forbids noise any later than 11 pm-ish depending on the area (in my village it's 10 pm), and campsite owners do have rules for 'quiet times' on the site. If they can't/won't do anything about the bar noise after say 11.30, you could always make a complaint at the local police station or town hall.
I am sure that you will have a great time, and whilst I understand why you might have misgivings that the site will not be as good as the English ones you are used to, I am sure you will find new and good things (eg the local freshly baked bread each morning) to enjoy. Bonnes vacances!
We are extremely looking forward to our first and hopefully not last visit to France, and as you quite rightly say especially the bread, wine etc....
My family stayed at this site in August 2004, a little while ago I know but we had a really good time and are considering returning next year. We stayed in a mobile home so I can't comment on the condition of the toilet blocks etc if you are camping. However, the site was well maintained, the supervised pool facilities good (my kids lived in the pool) and as I remember you were not allowed to wear shoes in the pool area in order to keep it clean (however the bit where you walked through the water to get to the pool area did get dirty!) be warned though the water was cold, cold, cold even though the temperature was in the 80's. It is noisy around the bar area as the entertainment goes on quite late and there are seats outside where people do gather quite late in high season so I would recommend getting a pitch as far away from there as possible (we were lucky and had no trouble at all) other than that the entertainment kept the kids happy and they made loads of friends. I think with a holiday like this you have to take the rough with the smooth, it is a laid back type of holiday and you have to go with the flow to enjoy it. The beach in Benodet is excellent and there is plenty of scope for walking, cycling etc however, Benodet itself, although very pleasant was also very quiet. A visit to Quimper and Concarneau is a must and a trip on a glass bottom boat to the Glennan Islands was very memorable as well. There is a reasonable size supermarket in Benodet but we found it was cheaper to do one big shop in the "Giant" supermarket just outside Quimper which you will pass on the way to Benodet. All in all we had an enjoyable two weeks here and we do plan to return.
