Hi
My mother is 73 and practically wheelchair bound; she can manage a few steps at a time, but has breathing difficulties, back pain, and other medical problems. We would really like to take her away for a week's sunshine (which she loves), but like most, we have a limited budget.
My partner and I enjoyed a wonderful, relaxing break in Turkey last year and I thought at the time, how much Mum would enjoy it. But I was acutely aware that she wouldn't have been able to take part in either of the excursions we went on. She would never have made it from the beach to the boat for the 7 islands boat trip and couldn't have managed the jeep safari either. Even our hotel, lovely as it was, wouldn't have been practical. Whilst sitting around the pool, if she had needed the loo, (which she does often) she would have had to go all the way back to her room, (that's assuming she would have been able to get a ground floor room), because the public loos were down a flight of stairs. Even Suara beach, which was a lovely place, would be no good for her; the only loos were in a restaurant a couple of hundred yards and about 30 steps up from the beach.
Can anyone suggest somewhere that's likely to be fairly hot around May, that is would be suitable and not too expensive - it doesn't have to be Turkey.
Thanks
Sue
sorry, I havn`t been on for a while and only just saw your posting. I suggest you have a look at Playa Blanca, Lanzarote. I was there last November. We stayed at the Lanzarote Princess which is fully wheelchair accessible. Although there are not too many dropped kerbs you can get used to finding the crossings which have them. The shopping area is pedestrianised. The beach near our hotel has a gentle slope down. May should be lovely. Check out the Lanzarote forum for weather details. The Lanzarote Princess is in the Thomson brochure and can be pricy but we booked it independently flying with jet2 and booked the hotel direct with Hotel Connect and it came out at half the brochure price. We are going back again this year.
On the way back from Turkey last October I sat next to a lady wheelchair user and she had been staying at the Sunrise hotel in Marmaris. It is on the beach midway between Marmaris and Icmeler. She said it was excellent and very wheelchair friendly. The surrounding area is very flat and there were loads of resturants and bars nearby. It features in several tour operators brochures.
Thanks Jax and Day Trip
