We are planning to visit the alps region, maybe Chamonix, in the summer and wonder whether this area is just for winter skiing?
We have a young family and would like to visit where there is plenty to see and do, and not too far off the beaten track with good amenities.
Does anyone know if Chamonix in the summer is a good place to visit? and if so any good places to stay?
Thanks in advance.

We visited a few years back just for the day. The place was heaving so there must be something to attract them! The temp in the valley was around 30 degrees. We had to choose between a ride on the yellow train and a cable car up to the aguil du Midi. We didn't have time for both. In the end we chose the cable car. It was -1 degrees at the top but it was spectacular! It was a bit of a pain to get into and out of the town as it is at the head of a valley and there was just one road in and out. The road also gets a lot of traffic from the tunnel that goes into Italy.
We also visited La Clusaz which had lots going on, including a 'Luge' run which was great fun - it was a metal 'sledge' run down the hill and you caught some sort of little lift up to it.
Annecy is a beautiful town and well worth a visit.
Hope this helps.

Just be aware that Switzerland is not in the EU and so you might want to check your holiday and car insurance and also if the E111 works there. Also they don't use Euros so you might need to exchange some money.
Driving is no problem you are covered by insurance , but need to buy road tax at the border which costs abut £40.
