I don't know about Bodrum and bites, but I always get badly bitten wherever we go. Last year though I was super careful and used lots of Jungle forumla spray and carried the wipes around with me so that I could redo my wrists and hands after washing them when going to the loo. I also wore long sleeves and no perfume and that seemed to keep them at bay, and we had a plug in in our bedroom.

As for the suncream, how about a sun block fomulated for babies? Usually they have a very high SPF factor but you must remember to reapply really regularly.

mags84,

You might find the following topic in our General Questions Forum useful; SUN TANS advice, products, recommendations, Q&As. The sun is very strong in Turkey through the summer so if he burns easily, use a high factor such as 40 or 50 and apply it regularly.

Bodrum isn't any worse than anywhere else for mozzies but if you are prone then the best thing to buy is either Johnson's Off! or Sinkov. You cn get them both from the pharmacies and supermarkets out there and they seem to work better than some of the ones you can but from the UK. Another thing you cn use to keep them away is lemon cologne, you will be able to get that everywhere out there too, use it instead of perfume as mozzies like perfume. It is also fine for kids to use too.

I assume your son must be very fair. Make sure you get your sun cream before you go as it is very expensive in Turkey and you can't always get high factors. Maybe you would do bets to ask at the chemist about a good sun cream. I always use Nivea Kids or Soltan for my children but they are dark skinned. Yo would also do best to get a waterproof one if he is going to be in the water a lot.

Where are you stying in Bodrum? I lived there for a few years, it is lovely there.

As Kedi has said, buy lemon cologne as soon as you get out to resort, we both put it on before going out. Another thing to do is to take Vitamin B1 Thiamin for one month prior to departure and throughout your holiday. This not only protects against mossies but also prickly heat.

Sunsense (its Australian), just google it on the net there is quite a few suppliers, you can't buy it in the shops. A dermatologist recommended it to me for my son, who is very fair and I can't recommend it enough. He wears factor 40 or 50, (they only do high factors) and he has never had a problem. Even though it is waterproof, you still must lather it on morning and afternoon at least (kids are in and out the water) Also my friends little girl who has quite severe eczema is now given sunsense by the hospital to use in the summer.
As for the mozzies, I would go with the vitamin B, I use any lemon product I can get my hands on (shower gel, body cream), use the plug in for the room and this year I used 50% Deet and also Mosquito Milk. Did we get bitten (we were in the Caribbean) the answer is yes, but only about 5 bites and that for me is not too bad. Some people I believe will just always get bitten whatever you use but for me if I can minimize the amount of times I get bitten, it is worth all the hassle.

Another good one to try is Incognito anti-mosquito spray which you can get off Ebay. It's currently getting rave reviews and has been rigorously tested under extreme conditions by the London School of Hygiene &Tropical Medicine on African mosquitoes -it scored 100% efficacy in all tests. Yet Incognito is certified as 100% natural and can be used by all the family including young babies. It doesn't contain any Deet. Apparently it doesn't repel the little blighters like other repellents but actually makes you invisible to them.

I live on the Bodrum peninsula for six months of the year and always used to attract mozzies. Now I use a combination of things and although I still get bitten, it is only occasionally. I use a spray, I take a vitamin B and anti-histamine tablet each evening, I use the lemon cologne and before we go out at night, we spray the rooms in our house with a fly/mozzie spray so that they're not lingering in the rooms when we get back.

Actually another thing that we have in the house is one of those electric tennis bat thingies - if we hear or see the odd mozzie, we take great delight in frying it on the bat. It may be worth investing in one to take with you - they're not expensive and don't take up much room in your case.

Hi everyone thanks for the advice i will try all these things. I do take mossie spray and have a machine for the room. I have also taken garlic tablets before and when i am there. Mossies just seem to love me.

Kedi we are going to the wow Bodrum resort.

Also thanks for sun cream advice last year i bought an American one costing £46.00 but it was the worst one i have had this year my son says he is keeping his top on all day. But i think i will try the Australian one
Thanks again

Hi,

Just remembered don't forgot a sun protection swim top, you can get them up to I think, age 15 in Next. My son always wears one but he is only 6, but last year my nephew who is 14 got burnt in Dorset so we got him a swim top from Next, and he always wears it now. Only got to put the sun cream on the legs, arms and face then!!

Mags84,

That was good of Sunsense, hope it works for your son and you can enjoy your holiday. Just don't forgot to put more than you think on, most people get burnt because they don't put enough on. or re-apply frequently enough during the day. Let me know how you get on and hopefully there will be no trips to the dr this holiday!

Hi Mags

I always get eaten by Horseflies over here so visited my chemist and asked for his advice before my first foreign holiday.

He suggested taking vitamin B tablets. Initially one a day in the 2 weeks leading up to your holiday, then take 2 a day whilst you are away.

I have had 9 holidays all around the Med and only got bitten once - that was when I forgot to take my tablets on my last holiday!!! It is also surprising how long a bottle of tablets will last. My OH did also find that the lemon cologne worked well and is readily available.
