taking a lap top on the plane

Hi folks does anyone know if youcan take a lap top on the plane as well as hand luggage. I know a few years ago your lap top was allowed as well as a piece of hand luggage but not sure if it has changed. We're going on a schedule flight with Air India.
You can carry it in hand luggage but need to take it out going through security
Yes, you can take a laptop in addition to your hand luggage.
I always take mine as I watch films I've downloaded from BBC I Player on the journey

Just to clarify the prevous replies, yes you can carry on a Laptop in ADDITION to your one piece of hand luggage, it doesn't have to go in to your hand luggage
