Hello! I want to go to Tunisia in spring 2008. the only problem left is my husband - he thinks that Tunisia is something like Egypt and he scares to go there. Please tell him how is it in Tunisia? Is it a safe country?
and a small question from me- i am looking for a really beautiful white thin sand. Which resort should we visit?
Thank you
To be perfectly honest some people do find Tunisia intimidating, mainly because of the culture of haggling, but if you don't want to get involved simply stay out of the Medina, don't respond to the greetings of the small shop-keepers and stick to the fixed price shops (though you will miss a great deal of fun). Many others love the place and return time and time again. It would be unrealistic to suggest that there is no crime but it is certainly one of the safest places to visit and as a woman travelling alone I feel far safer on the streets of Sousse, day or night, than I do in my local town. The same applies to travelling by train or local bus. You have to take the normal precautions that you would anywhere - don't have your wallet hanging out of your back pocket or leave your bag open, but that is only common sense.
Can't help you re the white sand - in my experience it's usually the golden variety. But there are many beautiful beaches, even if the sand isn't white.
Regarding safety, in the many times I've been to Tunisia, and in all the places I've visited out there I've never felt in the least bit unsafe. Quite the contrary. I'm guessing since you mention Egypt, the concern is more regarding terrorist attempts. Tunisia hasn't been totally free of these problems - there was a bomb at El Ghriba synagogue on Djerba in 2002. But as far as I'm aware this was the only successful attempt.
Also bearing in mind what's been happening in the UK recently, I think I would say I'd probably feel safer, or as safe in Tunisia as I do commuting to work in London every day.
Hope this helps.

Hi Turtle - I live in Tunisia for 6 months of every year and can only reiterate what the two previous posts have said. As you are obviously aware, Tunisia is a Islamic country - but very moderate and most travellers who visit there with an open mind find the people very warm and welcoming. We have been the precipitant of so much warm hospitality over the years and love Tunisia, it's people and way of life. There are many retired people from all over Europe, who return year after year for stays of of 3-6 weeks during the winter. This alone is an indication of the popularity of the place. It you enjoy a different culture, do give Tunisia a try - and enjoy! Jenny x
But I loved it, take some of the tips off here and enjoy it - I did, it's lovely
thank you for your answers!
i am here again...as it was planned before we are going to Tunisia in May. But just to ask- whats the best season to visit this country? Maybe we chose a wrong time?
Glad you managed to persuade your other half re Tn! I've been there at many different times of the year, including May and personally think it's a pretty good time to go - the weather is usually good, but because it's not into high season the resorts aren't bursting at the seams. Generally this means that as it's less busy you'll find it easier to book the excursions you want and possibly get better and quicker service in hotels and restaurants (although I have to say I've rarely been able to fault the service at any time).
I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time!
A.
