Hi
Looking at next year and fancy a nice quiet island with sandy beaches good food etc. Nocticed Lemnos for the first time and wondered if anyone have any views on it? Also what are peoples thoughts on thassos?
One thing I hate (well actually my other half hates as he gets stung every year!) is the wasps! It was a problem in Crete this July and Skiathos last August and I know the Greek Islands do seem to attract them! How bad is it in mid june, and do the 2 places mentioned suffer?
Also would welcome any comments on anyone who has booked with greeksun.co.uk - just ordered their brochure.
Thank you
We have been to many Greek islands but not Lemnos (well only to refuel) Friends have stayed there but would'nt return due to dull landscape. Sunvil have featured it for years. We enjoyed Thassos and would return if there were not so many other islands to visit. One island that we have visited several times is Lesvos, a big island with something for everyone except the Malia/Kavos crowd. Dont think wasps will be much of a problem that early in the season, very few about in Lefkas in early July this year. We have tried to book with Greeksun on several occasions but its always worked out too expensive. They cover a lot of islands mainly via Athens and the ferries, some of the travel arrangements need a good knowledge of the ferry timetables but the company does have an excellent reputation
We are 2 couples going - child free wayhey! We like to eat out in nice places and just sit and watch the world go by in the evening. Nice sandy beaches for crashing out in the day! Must admit more I look at Thassos more convinced I am by it!
Will have a look at Greeksun brochure when it arrives!
Last year we had 2 weeks in Scala Potamias in Thassos. We too would like to return but so many other places to go. It's still quite an uncommercialised island. I think a lot of Greeks go there. The 35 minute ferry ride is great. You can go round the island by car in about 3 hours. There is an active forum on http://www.thassos-forum.com/ . The International section is in English.
Sorry don't know anything about Lemnos except I think you have to fly from London and we live up north so not looked at it.

Thank you for that Jean, the more I look at Thassos the more I like the look of it!
I too love Thassos. If Symi disappears beneath the waves, I shall return there. I like the Harbour and the mountains. This is a working island and the marble quarries are a mainstay of the island's economy. The archaeology is splendid. Visit the Museum. DO not look at
It does all look lovely. Got the Greeksun brochure today and Naxos looks lovely too!
I would thouroughly recommend Naxos. We stayed in the Galaxy Hotel within easy walking distance of Naxos town and great sea views from the balcony. It has a small airport so is accessable by air from Athens as well as ferries from other islands, via Mykonos was our route
I shall be spending the day in Lemnos on 5 October as part of a ferry trip. If I find anything worthy of reporting back to you, I'll do so!
Thanks for that, that would be great.
We like a sandy beach, very much sun lovers and would be looking to stay very close to the beach.Would go self catering so need to have a supermarket or two around. Be good if there was somewhere on the beach we could go for a break from the sun for lunch and a glass of wine!
In the evenings we like eating good food and lingering over more wine and watching the world go by etc.
Not really into going into pubs but our other halves may want an extra drink or two - we are not nightbirds though!
Which resort do you recommend? We are happy to get taxis or buses into a different town, if we hired a car it would only be for a few days as part of the holiday is no driving!
We enjoyed Scala Potamias but we are a 50 year old couple. There were a lot of Greek famillies there when we went in August. There are a lot of tavernas and some bars along the beach road which is unmetalled. We booked with Thomson but they seem to have pulled out of a lot of resorts. You can walk to Golden Beach which is a smaller resort. Thassos Town has a bit more going on with boat trips and stuff.
Sorry we didn't stay in any of the other resorts for any length of time but Limenaria and Potos seemed to have a lot going on.
Hope you find a place you like.
Yiamass, Jean
This itinerary will be on offer with the same boat (no kids, no wasps hopefully!!) next year, and might suit you ...... you can add on a week in Halkidiki too! Might be worth checking Thomson for this...... and sorry if being mostly about a cruise, it's for this thread ..............

We stayed in Thassos town in the Finikes Studies (Portland brochure). The studios were a converted house, and I think there were only about 10 rooms. They were cleaned every day and we a good standard of s/c for Greece. There is a tiny pool, which we only used to cool off in (wasn't really big enough to swim in), and lovely gardens around the studios with chairs, tables and sunloungers. Out at the front of the apartment there was a lovely courtyard with vines where it was nice to sit and have a drink with the other residents. Whilst we were there we adopted a cat and her kittens, they were a delight! There are a couple of supermarkets a short walk from the apartments (which are in a residential area) and a bakery to die for!
Thassos town is wonderful - there is so much to see and do, although I wouldn't say it has the best beaches, but they were okay. We did lots of walking and sightseeing and would gladly have stayed longer than the week we booked! We were spoiled for choice by the number of restaurants, and never had a bad meal out whilst we were there.
I would go back again in a flash!
I am really sorry that I cannot tell you about Limnos/Lemnos ........ because the sea was so rough, and the harbour has no fenders, that the Captain of the Calypso decided not to attempt a mooring there! But the rest of the cruise was F A B!!
I always stay in Thassos town (Limenas) but get out and about everyday, for me the best beaches are in the South of the island so if its beaches you want I would stay in Limenaria which is close to Trypiti and Metalia beaches.
Skala Potamia and Golden Beach are very nice but they are resorts as opposed to Greek towns so I would plump for one of the following Limenas, Limenaria, Potos, or Pefkhari.
Me and my partner love greece, we have mainly been the larger islands and now fancy something smaller and peaceful.
We have looked at Thassos, which looks lovely. What would it be like in early may (as this is when we normally go away)
Will the restaurants/tavernas be open. We intend to spend the week relaxing and eating nice greek food.
Also we have never been anywhere where youy have to get the ferry across? How enjoyable is this and has it caused anyone any problems in the past?
Finally, i may consider hiring a car, however being that i have never driven abroad before what are the roads like ? Although i have read that the buses are good value so may just do that so i can really relax!
Many Thanks
Claire
Early May is a great time to be on Thassos all the spring flowers are out and the island is at its greenest.
Most of the tavernas and bars will be open but it will be quiet, the weather can be unpredictable to be honest and it will be cool in the evenings.
The road around Thassos is one of the best on any of the Greek islands and apart from the main town of limenas there will be very little traffic at this time of year.
The ferry crossing is part of the experience and only takes 35 minutes it really adds to the atmosphere of the island and you don't have the problem of air traffic noise.
Hope this helps.
I already have my heart set on it, just need to convince my other half later tonight.
I am sure he will want to go as he loves greenery and peace/quiet
Thanks
