The alexandra is in a spot on position with its own private beach,a short walk into potos village centre.good place for a chilled out holiday.
Only a few minutes walk from the best restaurant on the island as well called Zooom.

Thanks Gooligan

Have you stayed there yourself? If so I wouldn't mind some info please. Thanks for the website - it looks lovely.

Hi Joo9,

No I havent stopped there but I have been for a walk round the complex a few times(as a short cut to the beach at pefkari)
It does tend to cater more for the eastern european market though, least it did.
I first went to Thassos in 1999 then went back last June, literally NOTHING had changed in Potos apart from the new restaurant called Zooom which used to be a mini market.

Back in 1999 most tourists were brits and Germans, now it is Bulgarians,Slovaks and Romanians who travel there in their own cars so you can now get a great deal on car hire

Hi - anyone been to Thassos ? am considering a week there in June so if anyone has any recs. I'd be grateful. Mr Greeklass & I are going as a couple - we like somewhere relaxing with not too much nightlife but with some nice bars & tavernas to sample the local Kefi! and some nice beaches & sights for the daytimes would suit us!
Have been to Skaithos (was not keen) & am concerned it might be a bit soul-less like there ? Hope not but can't find much info on it!
Any info appreciated!

It was ok. Lots of places to eat, lots of places to drink, lots of shops, plenty to see. You could get round the island by car easily. Loads of ancient culture. Some nice beaches. Good scenery.

But could I get a half decent Bloody Mary or some Dry Ginger for the Whisky - Ochi!! (No, that is)

Bars we found were either in the wrong place or were quite poor. Wine was always great. Hotel Galaxy was nice.

All in all an ok holiday. But would probably not bother going back.

Hope I have not put you off.

My boyfriend and I went to Thassos a couple of years ago and stayed in Thassos Town. We loved it and would definitely go again. The ferry trip across to the island put off families with small children so it was mainly couples and families with older children.

The ferry journey across was hassle free as you sit and have a drink in a taverna by the sea and wait until the coach has boarded before you get on the ferry. The journey across was lovely and you could see the island in the distance looming closer.

There are plenty of bars in the town to choose from and lots of restaurants by the sea, in the main street or up the smaller side streets. You can make it as low key as you like depending on which area you go to. Lively main street bars or small local bar on the outskirts.

We loved sitting in the tavernas on the town beach with our feet in the sand watching the ferries going back and forth to Kavala.

The sea is crystal clear and the boat trip was superb!

Failing that, how about Kefalonia? Beautiful island, wonderful dramatic scenery, nice beaches and low key nightlife.

My sister and brother-in-law have been twice and enjoyed it.
Some friends went 2005 and liked it very much.
My Greek tutor (Athenian) says it's his favourite place.
Three good recommendations.

We are also going to Thassos for 2 weeks in June staying in Thassos Town at the Villa Chrisa, if anyone can give us any further information on either the resort or the accomodation it would be very helpful, many thanks.

We went to Thassos 2 years ago and were very disapointed by it.

Granted it was end of season (beginning of October) but we weren't impressed by the beaches or the island in general at all.

Compared to other greek islands, it was a big let down.

Might be a different story in peak summer though!

I would also recommend Kefalonia, amazing beaches, lovely people and just the right balance between relaxing and enough to do in the evenings.

Been to thassos twice the island as much to offer. I think we stayed at villa chrisa { will have to check } if so it was basic but very clean and friendly set on the main road but set in quite large grounds 10 mins from centre. We enjoyed ourselves very much . As for beaches if you look around there are some very good beaches . If you like mopeds or jeeps there are some absolutely excellent beaches most tourists are not aware of. I think perhaps mwebb never really looked around [ although he is right about kephalonia } hope that helps ....dave

steve we used potos car hire say hello to gordon . If you want to travel around island a car is good enough but if you want to see some of the more hidden beaches you will need a jeep we paid 40 euros per day for the jeep you can also reach the tops of the mountains not in car stunning scenery takes a while and at times you need nerves of steel havent planned my greek visit this year yet hopefully island hopping for 3 - 4 weeks for my 40th ...dave

We have been to Thassos twice and love it. The ferry is splendid when you are used to 2 hour trips to other islands. It is so quick that it is certainly worth a day trip back to Kavala.
One of the Town beaches is rebuilt each year. The bus service is fine and goes all round the Island.
The restaurants are excellent.
The archaeology is amazing. Do try the walk up the hill to the Theatre which has a wonderful view. Most of the Town is built on the old ruins which are easily accessible. There is a taxiboat service to other beaches.
Good luck.

Are there any nice tavernas and bars in Kavala that will make it worth going back there for the day or maybe for a few hours during our holiday to Thassos or is it just the ferry journey you enjoy?

My friend and I are visiting Thassos this June. Our problem is that we are both disabled so will we have trouble getting on the ferry. I have to use a walking frame and greek ferries I have used in the past have no lifts. I am determined to visit Thassos as I love the small Greek islands but it helps if you are aware of any problems you may come across This way one can be prepared. No problem is too much. We are both very determined and will try anything once Any information will be much appreciated

Visiting Thassos in May. Can anyone tell me if there is a ATM in Golden Beach. If not, where is the nearest.
Also. travelling with Thomas Cook do you leave your luggage on the coach for the ferry and the coach goes over or do you have unload and use another coach on the island. Any info appreciated.
