As I mentioned before, it's a Network pipefish but thats just going from a similarity in pictures. The fact that it has a short narrow bill may have caused you to not even see it, so maybe thought it had its head buried. On the other hand maybe it did! Who knows? Nice to discuss it though, brings Egypt a little nearer!
Having read this I now wonder if it was fish that bit me earlier this year. I assumed that I had three jelly fish stings in quick sucession, but they were only those tiny ones that apparently 'dont sting', and when I turned around to see what had stung me I saw nothing there. I had a very sharp pricking pain which took about an hour to wear off, and I had a very small amoutn of redness to the areas....I have to say it wasnt as painful as I expected jelly fish stings......maybe they were fish bites. It was on Mahmya Island.....guess I'll never know. Is that what jelly fish stings feel like?
Carrot - I'll need a better picture to tell the difference between flavofasciatus and schultzi. Saw several of the later this summer. Distinct line through the eye if you get close enough.
Yvonney - let me get this right. The pipefish is no the same thing that bit your son, right? The aggressive one was blue and yellow. But not the tang with a bright tail.

You were right Alan. Some people just know nothing about fish. Tsk.
Did the fish have blue/yellow stripes? Was it blue with a bit of yellow on it (or vice versa)? There are so many blue/yellow fish out there, it'll take ages to find the right one.

it was a more rounder fish shaped fish!!!!!
im going to google red sea fish images and get my son to pick out any that resemble it!!!
when i told the rep she said she would bring it to the hotels management but i know that she didnt take me seriously - not sure how they could stop people feeding them though as im sure thats why they were biting - my son said there were loads of fish having a go at each other aswell but it was all around the man with the bag of food.

The first time I got into the water at the Conrad (last December), I was "pecked" by a black and white striped fish which I thought was a bit much.
A few days later on while I was snorkelling and filming I was hit in the back by a Great White, but when I recovered and turned around, it had been chased off by my little black and white friend, who was by then the only fish in the area. No sign of the attacker at all so I couldn't film it.

thanx for the offer of a good long look through those fish books of yours .......
.... think i will keep on looking for a while longer 
my son says its a bit like the angel fish, regal tang and butterfly fish
one of the bites he got left two puncture holes ( like a stapler would make )
but it did drip with blood for a bit and the area was red and sore for a day. The two holes were clear to see for a few days.

The fish the nipped us were very small and very, very pale yellow, almost see through you had to look pretty hard to see them really and they swam in groups (i know that's not the right phase before anyones says - is it a shol of fish?)
Anyway they didn't leave a mark really or draw blood but it did make us very wary.

It was the black ones that bit me last year, so much so it clung to my thigh and woudnt let go.....it drew blood and was bleeding for ages. Next day a huge bruise appeared. i couldnt walk properly for two days.
This year in harm, they were all (several different types of fish) were biting everyone.

Threadfin butterflyfish - no wonder we were struggling to id it from the blue/yellow description.
Seems like the feeding just got them in a fenzy. There again I've had a blenny sink it's teeth in and end up hanging from the palm of my hand in Cornwall before now.

I suspected it was a threadfin butterfly all along but didn't want to appear too cocky!
Good job it was only a blenny that grabbed you, Alan, and not a great white!

I don't think it is the threadfin. It looks more like a Lined Butterflyfish. Are the black lines on the body vertical thin ones? You can't really tell on the photo.
