this point about English people thinking the Greeks owe us something, well technically they do, they owe you because you have PAID for your holiday, you haven't blagged your way there free of charge and dossed down in the first hotel you come to. One serious issue Greeks need to address is the standard of their accomodation, they constantly moan and gripe that tourists spend less and less money in their country yet they refuse to change the way they put people up, it's simple,if you want people to choose your hotel over one in spain then you have to give them a reason to do so, not everyone is a grecophile, many people just want to go somewhere foreign, hot, sunny and 'different' and hold no loyalty towards greece over anywhere else so when you pay say.....£500 for a week you look at what you get: in spain for instance you will usually get a decent, fairly large apartment with a modern bathroom, reliable aircon, useable kitchen, modern sturdy beds and often a passable breakfast, whereas in Greece 90% of the time you will arrive to find a ramshackle building built in the 1960's and barely touched since, with tiny rooms, old wooden beds,a miniscule bathroom with a useless shower,no curtain or hook for the showerhead and a noisy toilet,a kitchen that consists of a 'kitchenette' unit that is simply 2 paltry rings,an old fridge and a draw full of obscure mismatched utensils, and mostly the aircon,if there is any, will be old, noisy, leaky and expensive.
As for the resorts,no idea who you've met on holiday but i've never come accross the attitude you speak of.
I'm posting this as a resident of some 8 or 9 years in Greece who has worked in and around the tourist industry all that time, including in various apartment complexes.
