Hello All,
I am new to this site today so I apologise if I have posted in the wrong place,
if so please move this post, and I promise I wont do it again
The reason for my post is to ask if anyone here has experienced a similar issue
to one I have encountered recently with Thomas Cook.
I have been looking for a holiday and came across what seemed to be a very good
deal on the Thomas Cook website yesterday morning.
After entering my search criteria (departing airport, destination etc...) I was taken
to the search results page, and shown a list of holidays matching my selection.
(This was just before 10am)
However, if I tried to book the holiday at the time, I was told that there was a problem
with the booking system, and that my booking could not be completed. I suspected that
this may be a temporary "glitch", and thought id try again later that day.
When I came home from work yesterday, I went back onto the website, and again
entered by search criteria, was redirected to the results, and found the same holiday again.
However, still, I couldnt book the holiday because of an "Unexpected Booking System Error".
So, I thought id give Thomas Cook a call, and provide them with the "Holiday Locator ID" that
the website provides you with.
After waiting on hold for nearly 30 minutes, I was told that the holiday was available for booking
only at a higher price. Obviously, this wasnt what I was expecting, and I wasnt prepared to pay
the higher price.
I spoke to one of the supervisors who was working at the time, but didnt get anywhere with
regards to getting the holiday at the advertised price.
The supervisor told me that the holiday was no longer available at the advertised price (which was STILL
being advertised on the website). The explanation for this was that the website wasnt "live", and therefore
the prices advertised on it are not neccessarily correct, and the holidays might not neccessarily be available
for booking.
To me, this seemed completely ridiculous, and I requested that a member of management call me in the morning.
I had to call them to speak to someone, as I hadnt received the phonecall I had been promised.
Having spoken to this manager this morning, he only confirmed what his colleague had told me the night before,
and that the website was not "live", and that they were not willing to offer me the holiday at the price that I
had seen it advertised.
To be fair to them, they did offer me a discount of 5%, but this wasnt good enough for me considering the efforts
I had gone to, and even with the discount, it was still more than they had been advertising it.
The incorrect advertisement wasnt removed from the website until this morning.
And so, disappointed at my loss of a good deal, I started searching for another holiday, reluctantly on the Thomas
Cook website.
Guess what I found!?
The holiday that I had been told was previously unavailable at £739 pp!
And it is now being advertised at £702 pp!
And guess what - you still cant book it!
A phone call to Thomas Cook shortly after I noticed this was again a waste of time. I was told
that I could have the holiday, but at a "considerably different price" (the words of the Thomas
Cook employee ironically).
It seems that Thomas Cook are advertising holidays that simply dont exist!
Has anyone else experience this with Thomas Cook or any other agent for that matter?
From a legal point of view they seem to think they have themselves covered, and I understand why they feel safe!
Their terms and conditions do clearly state that prices and availability are liable to change, but from what I have seen,
I see this is a deliberate attempt to mislead customers - possibly through ommission.
After speaking to the manager earlier, he confirmed that when a user of the website encounters
an "Unexpected Booking System Error", it is recorded, and someone at Thomas Cook investigates it.
But what makes me laugh is, if their website can tell me on one page that the holiday cant be booked,
why cant the previous page (with the cheaper price)!?
Does anyone have any advice on where I could go next? Trading Standards? The ASA?
I'll let you know how long it takes for them to remove this mistake!
This sounds like one for your local Trading Standards. Give them a call and ask for advice. I have always found them very helpful.
This, the TO and TA forum is the correct forum for this post, but I am going to move it to our Holiday Complaints forum where it may get a better response.

I called at the nearest Thomas Cook agent on Saturday who went through the booking with me and then said she could match the internet price. So I now have the holiday I wanted at £32 less than the internet price. The assistant was helpful and pleasant and went out of her way to explain and go over things.
I just hope the holiday is as stress free!
Incidendally, the same holiday with Thomson was £300 dearer.
Perhaps that's the answer, call a TC travel agent. They don't even need to be local as we deal with travel agents hundreds of miles away all the time.
Hi,can you print the page? if so take it to Thomas Cook, they should match it,we use Thomsons and I always get internet price ,they always match it if no more than 24 hours has passed.Good luck,I hope you get sorted.
I suspect that it is probably poor control over processes within their web team/IT department that has caused the problem rather than a deliberate act to mislead a consumer.
Thought you might like to know that this problem is still happening with Thomas Cook.
I've been pricing a holiday for 8 of us for the past couple of weeks. Finally decided to go with Thomas Cook, but came up with the same problem.
Have a friend who is a travel agent so asked his advice. He said it's an 'ongoing problem'. The reason you can't book, is that the deal is not available.
He asked me to print out my 'quote' and then not only did he match the price, he got me a 5% discount. Doesn't sound much, but with 8 of us going so it's a fair whack of money.
We then decided to upgrade our seats to premium, and went through the exact same process. Web site said seats available, but an unexpected booking error occured!!!!!
In the end travel agent got them for £149 each. Web site price that was not available £99. Web site price that was bookable.....£232!
I might add that I rang round a few places for prices, playing one off against another, as per Martin Lewis money saving expert guide, and the only people who we're rude and had a take it or leave attitude were Thomas Cook.
I think it's just a hook to get you in.
hi, we had a similar experiance of the website stating thet booking could not go ahead on the holiday I wanted at the price I wanted, so I went down to my local thomas cook branch and actually got £162 off the website price !!! so we were happy !!
I usually find good deals on line for my friend, well I found what we thought was a great deal on the Thomas Cook website and she asked me to book it, but guess what, there was a booking system error, so I advised her to ring TC.
The same old story -"maybe it is no longer available" and so on and so on- anyway she persevered and fin
ally the operator said "that particular holiday is with our parent company", which is Direct holidays, and asked if she would like to be transferred through, which she did, and lo and behold there was no problem, it was booked at the agreed price.
I thought TC had taken over Direct, My Travel etc, so why is there such a difference in prices?
Forgot to say TC wanted over £200 more than the online price!!!
Sounds like we were really lucky, though we were extremely pleased with the first price, we were ecstatic with the final one.
Simple you would think but not so. I cant even begin to write in full about this nightmare experience that lasted about 9 days as I would be going on for hours.
Keeping this short. Couldn't believe my eyes when I checked later that day to find the cost of the exact same holiday for 2 of us had gone up by £300. Checked about 4 different times at intervals as I was so shocked but it is still showing today as £300 more. How unfair is that?
Holiday itself was wonderful.
I'm wondering if a particular hotel gets a lot of searches on the website do they then inflate their prices?
I had problems booking on line with Thomsons so had to go into the branch the following day. They told me in future if I print the page they'll match the price. I'll definitely be doing that next time as I didn't like not knowing if the holiday was booked or not, if my money had been taken or not, etc. Sounds like Thomas Cook will do the same thing.
my problem was slightly different in that the price online was bookable, but they charged my card twice. Thankfully knowing someone from HSBC in our local branch, they sorted it out but it could've easily cost me had I not noticed online quickly
