There are plenty of places to arrange trips locally even down to your hotel.

The local bus service, is very cheap and comfy. You can then make your own way to several places.

for example try the trip to Knossos but if you decide to travel independtly go in the afternoon it is a lot
quieter and relaxed after all the coaches have left.

Take the bus services to Heraklion and Ag Nik it will be more relaxing and you can spend more time there.

Thanks for info. Past experience proved cheaper to book trips locally than through reps but not having been to Crete before wasn,t sure how easy it would be. 12 days to go and counting and weather seems to be picking up too
