Hi, I'm going on the Destiny in four weeks (can't wait!) and have found the information on this forum invaluable.
One thing I'm still confused about is the electricity supply in the cabins. The comments on hairdryers make me feel that I really need to take my own, but is it true that a European voltage one won't work in the cabin, even with an American adaptor?
Also, has anyone stayed in the deluxe cabins on the Promenade Deck? If so, what is the fridge like? It says in the brochure that it is a fridge/mini bar - does this mean is is full of booze, or is there room for the odd bottle of water?
Hope someone can help, and I'm sure I'll think of lots of other questions over the next few weeks!
I take GHD straighteners every year (because I HAVE to straighten my fringe before I go out the door and they don't work very well because of the voltage issue. Enough to straighten my fringe with to make it presentable but not really hot enough to straighten my hair with properly. And this year we got a call from the bridge just before we went to dinner asking if everything was okay because the fire alarm was showing for our cabin
So the cabin hairdryer will probably function better, whilst your own hairdryer will probably be less of an obstacle. Hope that helps!
Can't answer the deluxe cabin/fridge issue question though!
I have booked a delux cabin on Promenade Deck, but not going until 5 Jan 07 I will be doing the Colourful Coasts Itinerary, so any tips when you get back would be appreciated!! I have not been on the Destiny before, only the Spirit June 05 and the Emerald in June 06. I ended up buying a hairdryer from the duty free shop on the ship which already had the two prong plug, cos the ones in the cabin were so poor! I paid £12 but it was well worth it! My daughter was freaking out with the hairdryers in the cabin This is why I ended up buying one. My GHD's didn't work very well either with it being 110 v. It barely heated up Since coming home I have bought some Braun Gas straigheners and they seem to work better, so I will be taking them with me in January
Debbie
Bayliner, when I get back I will give you all the details!
In the meantime, anyone out there who has stayed in a deluxe on the Destiny, any information at all would be great!
I ended up using the socket in the corridor outside our room. My straightners worked fine using this socket.
we are going on Thomson Destiny on the 10th August for 2 weeks and i was wondering what is the best way to take our money with us. Should we take all in euros or half english half euros or travellers cheques we could really do with some advice on that if anybody can help ?
Also what currency is it on the ship?
Many Thanks in advance

I would take half euros and half sterling and change more sterling if you need to.
The ship is a cash less system, you use a boarding card to charge to all the time you are on the ship. When you first board the ship, you either register a credit or debit card with Reception which is charged to half way through your holiday, then the balance is debited again the day you leave the ship, or alternatively you can put down say £200 cash to charge against on your card, then you keep topping it up as your account balance increases. You always know what your balance is at any time you want. The only cash that is used is in the Casino and this is sterling.
When purchasing goods in the duty free shop, it is all marked up in sterling.
We have done two Thomson cruises recently and I would recommend you use either a debit/credit card to use against your account. It saves a lot of hassle rather than carrying lots of cash
Trips with Thomsons are also charged straight to your onboard account in Sterling too.
As said above, best bet to just take a credit card (or Sterling cash if you prefer) for your onboard account and some spending money in Euros.
And some Sterling notes if you wish to use the casino.
I have a feeling that if you wish to use a cash deposit instead of registering a credit card for your onboard account, then the minimum accepted is £200, I'm not sure, I will check this but if so and you wish to take cash make sure you take enough!
Sailed on the Destiny last June, had deluxe cabin 7005 (Tulip Tree suite - all the cabins on this deck are named after flowers) The cabin was exactly like pictures in the brochure. No room in fridge for any water though Reece ! Took my own hairdryer as had read that in cabin ones weren't much good. Having a half size bath was brilliant, no banged elbows in cramped shower. Enjoy
I have booked a delux cabin no 7000, which I believe is on the same deck! I would have loved a suite, but the suppliment was double the price again! That's my spending money!!! I have quite a while to wait for mine, as we don't go until Jan 07, but it's something to look forward to when all of the hype is over after the New Year The Canary Islands should be still around 24 degrees, so still better than the UK weather!
I have also read in the brochure that if you pay cash toward your on board account the minimum to credit is £200.

Bayliner, I know what you mean about a suite - I'd have loved one too. I would love to have my own balcony, its just that little bit of luxury isn't it? Anyway, I'm sure we will all enjoy ourselves very much.
I remember having a mini bar when I was on the Spirit last year and what we did, was bought smaller bottles of water from the local supermarkets and put them in the mini bar lying down. You could always do that on the Destiny?? I also remember that there were bars of chocolate in there to purchase!!!
I'm sure you will find a way!
Not long to go now!!
Hopefully I will get a few tips on your return
Debbie
If you haven't been in this cabin before, you are in for a surprise. You get both 240V and 110V supplies. The wardrobe is a virtual walk in, you could put a large childs cot in it. There were three room sizes and a hallway, also three double windows. In the seating area there were two tables with seating for nine people and a large setee which can be converted to a double bed.
The main bedroom which is separate from the other areas has a large double bed and its own TV, separate from the main one. The bathroom is massive, with a real bath as well as a shower and plenty room to swing half a dozen cats
It is considered by the staff to be one of the best cabins on the ship, and in actual fact is designed for four. There were just the two of us in this one, me and my twin brother. Not knowing about the bed setee at the time, and being " Brothers not Lovers " at first we were not pleased having booked a twin bedded cabin. The cabin steward said " No problem I will just make up the bed setee " Because of all the room just for two he didnt have to convert it back again all week, just make both beds as usual.
This cabin is also very close to where your life boat is, handy for the lifeboat drill.
Cheers,
Dave
Well i'm delighted to hear this!!! So I have struck gold then I always study the deck plans carefully before booking my hols and always choose my cabin wisely! Looking at the deck plans from the website, this did look to be a larger room, but you cannot always tell from a drawing. Well, Well, I will look forward this holiday If all is not what it seems, can I hold you responsible?? Knowing my luck it will be a little cupboard
Seriously I have always found the cabins on the previous two Thomson ships that I have been on, to be really nice! One of them was a suite! unfortunately I cannot afford to keep on doing that!!!
Debbie
could anyone tell me if there are kettles in the cabins, I don't think there is but just wanted to make sure. Do we need them??
Many thanks, can't wait to go on Thursday!!
No there aren't any kettles in the cabin and you aren't allowed to take them in. You will not need a one either, as there are hot cups of tea, coffee available in the restaurant 24 hours.
You could always ask for room service for a hot drink if needed, but there is a charge for it.
Have a great cruise!!
Debbie
Thanks Debbie, I'll have to send my hubby up for my morning tea then ha ha
Cabin 7005 although called the Tulip Tree Suite it was just a deluxe cabin - your 7000 cabin will be called a suite too (Hibiscus ? ) It was a treat for our Silver Wedding and not something I would normally splash out on. They are very spacious, especially the wardrobe space. Deck seven is very good for going out onto deck when coming into port/leaving port, you will only have to walk a few steps, turn left and go through the doors and you'll be out on deck. Picture windows in cabins are lovely too - quite high up so people walking on deck can't peep in ! Don't miss cocktails in the Chart Room (think they have called it something else this year, but it's the big glass fronted bar at the top of the ship) views are magnificant.
We are off on Aug 11th on the Emerald, hope she is as good as the Destiny.
Way to go Bayliner! Sounds like you are going to have your suite after all - all but the balcony anyway. Good choice, Debbie!
i wonder if anybody can help me????
when you go onboard the ship the £200 you have to pay for the account is this per person or per room ??????
Kind Regards
