Is this a good company to go to Florida with from Gatwick? What are their planes like and what entertainment is on board. How do they compare with Virgin? They are a lot cheaper for their flydrives but would like to know the differences?

Atrocious company. Would never use them again. We were out in Florida when 9/11 kicked off & they couldn't have cared less about any of us. Riots nearly broke out in their office because of their attitudes whilst I know for a fact that Virgin bent over bacwards to help all their clients.

Travel City Direct are starting direct flights from Manchester to Cape Town, South Africa from 5 november. See here for more info.

Also florida flights next year will be operated by a mixture of Boeing 747-400 and Boeing 767-300 aircraft. Both will be overbranded Travel City Direct and will operate with Sunshine First, Sunshine Premium and Economy, plus Sunshine Upper on the Boeing 747's.

good points -

i upgraded my car from economy to convertible before we left and was told it was £90 when i got the email convermation it was £195 i phoned up to a uk call centre and was told i should be 195 and the man i spoke to had made a mistake, i kicked off and they honoured the £90 that to me is great customer service

we were flying when the postal strike was in full flow with no sign of an end they phoned to tell us to pick the tickets up at manchester airport on the day - i was worried but they were there as they said

cheap as chips! no one can beat them on value

both flights on time

free drinks including alcahol

bad points -

you can book flight only you can only book fly drive or fly + hotel or both

because of the above and because there were 514 people on our outgoing flight there was a 2 hour queue at the car rental place

very bad point -

the plane we flew both ways was a boeing 747 - all well and good i tought untill we got on after noticing there were no tvs in the headrest in front i sat down and looked around and saw where somone had scratched "07" into the plastic near the glass there were other scratches too due to a lot of use - then i saw somthing that i had never seen on a plane in all my life ASHTRAYS i was shocked i asked one of the cabin crew how old the plane was she told me at least 20 but no to worry as they last for years - i was worried but we got there so thats all teh matters really on the way back as we borded i asked a different cabin crew member how old the plane was she told me 30 years old - it still had the same fittings and ashtrays i laqter found iut it was the same plane and that tcd use the same plane for manchester to sandford flights for every trip once a day one way but she told me the one we were on was gouing to be used for iceland trips i think she said or sold to an icelkandic airline or somthing and TCD were going to use 767's instead for our trip a smaller palne i asked if they were to have tv's in the headrests she said no and the tcd planes that had that feture had been sold off

one our return flight i mentioned to the cabin crew member how about one of the staff we had on the flight in she asked me her name i said i didnt remember it - "the reason i ask if that there were a lot of redundancies on wednesday and she may have been one of them" she said (that wednesday she meant was 31/10/07) why the redundancies i thought?

i since flighing with TCD found out they buy BA decommisioned planes

overall TCD got me to florida and we had a great time - would i fly TCD again? probably not - cheap is good but cheap and nasty isnt.

Not quite correct information re the TCD planes.

They are not decommissioned planes from BA, in fact the operator of the planes XL don't have any decommissioned planes from BA.

Like all airline companies they lease plane to and from other airlines, for correct information on XL (and other airlines) aircraft this website will give you the proper details about the aircraft they operate.

http://www.airfleets.net/home/

The 747 in service at the moment went in to service on 17/10/1984.

there were a lot of redundancies on wednesday and she may have been one of them" she said (that wednesday she meant was 31/10/07) why the redundancies i thought?

Again redundancies are also common at this time of year as airlines reduce the number of planes they operate during the winter months, nothing strange, sinister or newsworthy there either I am afraid.

Have TCD retired their fleet of 747's? Looking at the website, seems that all the flights are now XL, and are different planes.

Indeed their (old) B747's are gone. Flights to Florida will probably operate on XL B767's. I believe they are also looking at A330's.
No more upper decks!

I would not go with this company again if they offered me a free trip all expenses paid. They are appalling & could not give a dam when things go wrong. The planes breaking down seems to be a regular occurrence. We were out there when 9/11 hit. They offered no support or advice & when we went to their office like many Brits did they were rude & aggressive & basically told us all to stop making such a fuss about it.

I will stick with Virgin thank you. At leat they act in a professional manner !!!

It might be difficult to form a fair opinion of the company, based on their performance in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. I doubt if many travel related companies were performing at their best at the time, as the unprecedented nature of that incident and the sudden and indefinite lock down of airports left them completely in the dark about when services may resume. I remember many thousands of US holidaymakers being stuck in the UK at the time too, frustrated at being unable to obtain information from their travel industry or ours, as to when they might be able to return home.

Travel City Direct returns

Travel City Direct is relaunched today (Monday) after some of its assets were acquired by Virgin Holidays.

The Florida specialist operator was among the brands dragged down by the collapse of former parent company XL Leisure Group last September.

Travel City Direct is now a trading name of the Virgin Holidays Group and is fully bonded under ATOL number 2358 and ABTA number V2043.

New Travel City Direct brochures are being mailed to previous customers and a bookable website http://www.travelcitydirect.com is up and running.

A dedicated call centre of specialist reservations staff has been created.

Car rental is available with Dollar Rent a Car and flights will be on scheduled airlines, including Virgin Atlantic.

Prices start at £399 per person for a 14-night holiday to Orlando from March 1, based on Gatwick departures for four people sharing at the Masters Inn Maingate.

Head of marketing Carol Williams said: "Although we've been away for a while, Travel City Direct is coming back stronger than ever and very proud to become part of the Virgin Holidays family.

"Providing great value holidays to Orlando and beyond was where the brand started and how we became respected in the market. We've now joined forces with the leader, Virgin Holidays, and can renew our pledge to offer quality holidays at affordable prices."

She continued: "In the last four months there has been so much chatter on the internet from previous customers, asking whether Travel City Direct would return, that we know they have missed us and are ready and waiting to book with us again."

Virgin Holidays marketing director Andrew Shelton said: "As the leading UK operator to Florida, partnering with Travel City Direct to bring back its popular affordable quality offer fits with our portfolio of brands nicely.

"The return of Travel City Direct as part of the Virgin family ensures that Florida remains accessible for all with a simple but affordable option to suit appropriate budgets. The timing, given the current economic climate, couldn't be better"
