Hi I have got 500euros in travellers cheques that I would like to cash, went into my local thomas cook ans asked how much I would get back in £'s and was told I would recieve £406 back if changed up today, does that sound about right :que , seemed a bit low to me??. Would really like the money for xmas, but was hoping for a bit more, might just have to hold onto them :( .

:( Yep I am afraid that would be correct, most places will buy back at around 1.23 EUR to the £ at the moment, infact todays rate at the post office is 1.29 so you would only recieve £387 from them :yikes

It might actually be worth checking with your own bank what exchange rate they would give you. At one point in the past I simply signed and paid in Thomas Cook travellers cheques - admittedly in £sterling denominations - into my ordinary account and got full face value for them. Unlike TC who wanted to charge me for cashing them back at the time!

If you can afford to do so the best value to be had, however, is probably to hang on to them until you are next in a Euro zone country and cash them there.

I always pay in my leftover £sterling traveller cheques to my bank account, they are treated just the same as normal paid in cheques. :) Paula

So does that mean I would get a better rate just paying them straight into my bank account??.

Thanks

Those that have paid them into their bank accounts have paid in sterling TC's and not euros. You would need to check the exchange rate your bank will give you.

Has anyone used ICE currency exchange? They come up as the best buy on money supermarket, and have rates much better than any others (e.g Trinidad Dollars is 9.15 with most providers, but 9.55 with this ICE).

Any experience anyone?

Thanks

Hi, just to follow on from the thread re Nationwide debit card...

I used to use sterling travellers cheques years ago for my holidays in Europe but have been using my NWide debit card in recent years. Now that the charge has been introduced on the card I was wondering if I'd be better off going back to using travellers cheques?? What do you all think? Is the debit card still the best option despite the fees?

We still always use TC's for our holiday in Goa each year. We normally take £1000 in cheques which cost us £15 from M&S. We always get the same as the cash rate for changing them with the added security of it being fairly easy to get replacements if lost or stolen.

I do however use a debit card ( Santander zero account) when we go to Turkey. I just don't feel confident enough with the ATMs in India to use a card from my main current account.

for europe I'd still use the flexi card! As long as you draw the maximum out each time you should still be slightly better off than changing it before you go or in resort and at least you don't have to take round a bunch of cash on holiday! £300 is the max daily limit you can withdraw!

i just use my natwest debit card in the ATM. as long as you draw out the max each time (£300 now) it works out just as economical as other methods.
now that i only need euros i just keep any i have left for my next trip rather than change them back.
i did a couple of comparisons with a friend of mine who uses the nationwide flexi card, and on both occassions, once for cash and once for ciggies, i got a better deal by all of 40 cents on £ 300.
if i was going outside europe i would look at travellers cheques, but that is now unlikely.

I have not used Travellers cheques for years really - I take some Euro's and my debit card to top up when needed.

Always use sterling tc's.....I know with my luck, my card would be eaten by the machine on the first day and I'd be totally up the creek! Like my tc's as I can gauge better what we've spent and what we've got left!

I always use Sterling TC's, I still take my card with me though. I don't pay any commision on TC's through my bank. The last time I used my card in Spain at an ATM, it was cloned and got stopped so I'm very wary now.
