Hello, now that the Holiday season has all but finished and it is now the winter season, I would just like to tell you about my first Um Bica (coffee) For years me and the wife have had a bit of fun over having a bica and both have never had the nerve to have one as they are a bit strong, so we alway go for the coffee con leche.
Well on our July summer holiday to Lagos we got the train one day to Silves, well after a nice walk round the town up the castle and cathedral and back down for a look what was left in the market we went to the Churrasqueira Valdemar next to the market and river for a bit of lunch as we always do when we go to Silves.
After a great meal of chicken, chips and salad with a bottle or two of Super Bock it was back of to the train station and up the hill, we walk up it to try and walk of our meal, so when we got there we had a half hour wait for the train back to Lagos so we though we would go to a local cafe for a drink, I did not take its name but it was the first one next to the station on the right.
In we go and when I say local thats what it was just one local block sat reading his paper and the boss behind his counter well the wife said she would just have a water and I just felt like a coffee so up to the bar and in my best Portugese I asked for.
So on the bar he put one small bottle of water and to the coffe he said no, so I thoght did I say it right and asked again, he said no again and then said no Leche so what could I do but go for the Bica.
Sitting down at the table with the two drinks my wife laughing at my Bica said are you going to drink that then, I had a sniff it smelt very strong, so not to be a weed I put a little bag of sugar in it and had a sip, well I must say after that I never stopped drinking them for the rest of our holiday and it was no more Coffee con Leche's or Galao's for me I am now know to my wife as Um Bica.
The tale of my first Um Bica,
Dave
Never tried a Bica, but I believe they put you on a high so to speak (Full of caffeine), in fact we are flying out on Friday and am now curious to what they taste like so I think I'll be brave and test one while we are there. Will let you know the outcome & if I agree with you. What a nickname "Um Bica", but its different
I love them but then I love strong black coffee.......only problem is they are too small, I usually have a duplo......
Maybe that's what affects me when on my hols and I thought it was something to do with the tinto.......
Have a great time when you go and I hope the sun shines for you.....
P.S.......keep practising.....
Pat
Cheers Pat, just realised that all the caffeine in the Beca may affect my bloodpressure problems I only buy de-caff coffee on Dr's orders for that reason, maybe I should refrain from the experience to be on the safe side. All packed and ready to go
Dave.
Realholidaymaker,Thinks I'll be a devil and try one, what the hell, its only once. will let you know the after effects later next week Regards the salt on fish and chips, well i am a good girl and refrain from this wonderful taste bud experience.
Have a wonderful holiday!
( And don't you dare worry about us all freezing our bits off here... )
Um Bica toooooo stronge for me, and also not enough to gargle your tonsils with ,will stick to my cafe com leite. Thanks Milly, sorry too late, but a good time was had by all and nooo i didnt even worry about you's lots freezing the ba==s off a brass monkey . Back to the usual depressing cold weather for another 10 weeks, never mind thats the joy of living in the UK.
I agree with Jayjan, too small an amount to appreciate. Gimme a a couple of mouthfulls at least! But anyway I prefer "um garoto" which comes with its own milk jug (hot)
It's to be savoured, not knecked like a short!
Cant beat a Bica Cheia with a full sachet of sugar. My missus is so hard core she does not even take the sugar....
Not wishing to nitpick but it is "Uma bica"
Dave
Um and Uma are the same except that Um is for masculine words and Uma for feminine words and as bica ends in an a it makes it feminine.
However all this is imaterial as I am a Galão man myself followed by a number of Superbock.
Roll on Christmas when I shall be out there to sample a few!
I'm gonna check all these drinks out in January when we'll be escaping this dreadful chilly UK weather. I'll report back then.
Obviously we did not frequent any of the rip-off High St. coffee bars, other than to laugh at the prices...
Addick, As you know it will be more expensive for us now in Albufeira with the euro rate we are getting in the UK, and it looks like its gonna get worse. Hope all the bar owners take pity on us Brits and drop their prices
If it wasn't for the 101 taxes we have to pay, we could...
I know you got more taxes and licences for this and that than the holes in a big seive, shall just have to drink less, at least the ciggies are cheaper than UK so thats one consolation. My hubby sez, well we carnt do nowt about it so just carry on as normal. On a serious note though its going to affect bar, restaurant & shop owners badly, maybe not you, as much as others, with you having regular expat customers all year round. By the way are you open in mid January? if you are we may just call in and see you.
We will be badly affected too, after all, those that are working are earning their money through tourists, and those that are on pensions have seen their income drop as the £ does.
Addick I'm not sure if any of the other Holidaytruthers are out in January, I will have to ask around.
