A lot more interesting than Kato Pafos, the local market for one, also most of the shops are in Katimi Pafos (old town) closes there at nights though..don't miss this part of Pafos..

So theres no Tavernas or bars there?

A few but it is a day place..I cant think of any Tavernas that open there at nights, go to villages or Kato..

A trip to the market is a must if you're in Pafos. We always stock up on spices which they sell at very low prices. Also you'll find all the leather goods, cypriot delight, jewellery and all the other stuff you see in the tourist areas at a fraction of the price in the market.
Easily accessible by bus and there are a couple of decent cafe's outside the market where you can have a pint of freshly squeezed orrange juice for a quid.
You'll also find the local museums in Upper Pafos

Where abouts is the market held?

The market is actually an indoor market, It's on the map and is also on a few of the bus routes. The no 15, I think, goes there from Coral Bay, via Pafos Harbour and you can always hop on that one if you're in Pafos.
Not open sundays, by the way

Not that far to walk..

The duty free stuff is sometimes cheaper up ther as well. A couple of nice tavernas to wait in while the wife does some shopping. Keo's are quite refreshing as well. There is a lift that takes you down to the lower level, but it's a hell of a walk to the beach from there.

You might as well have a few more Keos and go back on the bus.

The 'walk' up to the market isn't too bad as long as you've been in Cyprus a while , a re armed with a gallon of water and are more used to the heat!

I can't see how anyone can visit Pafos and not go to see the old market - it has a great atmosphere!

Am going to brag now, but we managed to walk from the Tomb of the Kings up to the market and back to the harbour by the end of the holiday the other August. Having said that, we were expecting a bus to arrive and gave up ! I have a 'knackered knee' and coped so it can be done !

(Must admit, we did get a bs back to the Paphian Bay and fell through the doors ------ and didn't move for hours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ) 'Mad dogs and English men' comes to mind! Then again, it's a great excuse for a lager or 2 --- or more!

Oh well ------ haven't been to Cyprus since August 2004 and we have a 17 day stay coming in August -------------- can't wait to 'come home'

Oh ek

We first visited in 2004 and it was incredibly hot --- we've been 4 times since and it's never felt as hot. We're staying at the Paphian Bay so whatever the heat we're banking on the sea breeze!

To be honest, in 2004 we underestimated the heat and suffered for it a bit --- have been very, very careful since! We did a Nile Cruise and felt like we were walking on a ship for weeks after we came home - not enough water (?) Learned our lesson and have been out today to buy some 'cool carriers' for our water bottles!!!!!

Never mind, we are the people who went to Lake Garda after a 3 month drought and suffered 2 weeks of torrential rain mid August 2005, so we may help to cool things down a bit!

Whatever the weather - it will just be great to be back!

Re water: we now take two .5ltr stainless steel thermos flasks.
We fill them with chilled water and ice cubes.

We've just got 2 x 2 litre thermos bottle carriers ---- the ice cube idea sounds good ! Never thought of adding ice cubes ------- we do have a fridge / freezer in the room! We'll try that one!

Cheers

You can put small bottles of plastic water in the freezer over night, wrap them in a towel and you will be surprised how long they last through the day, and you just take sips of iced water when needed...I have been here some years now and summer is always hot, but this June is the hottest I can remember and I have to say VERY unpleasant.

Any thing over 30c get uncomfortable and they tell us locally that it will top the very rare forty degrees this week, to that I say off to the travel shop and a flight back up north.

Thanks for that Jim - I think that the hottest it's ever been when we have been there is about 34 (officially) and as far as I've been told that's not taken in direct sunshine. It was scorching hot at 34 ----- over 40 sounds ---errrrr... unbelieveable. Then again, have always wondered if we'd survive Egypt in August - this may be our chance to find out!

Must admit - we wouldn't be trapsing round from the harbour to the market in the hottest part of the day in those temperatures --- we'd be heading for Woolworths and the air con!!!!

Find it ironic that in February we were in Lapland at minus 32 --- talk about from one extreme to the other! Bet you'd like to see some nice cool snow at the minute

:D

Problem is not the hottest part of the days, but the nights, temps only drop a few degrees making sleeping as last night almost impossible..same for tonight I guess, and also the threat of power cuts...we already have no drinking water during daylight hours..
