To those of you who have been to Vietnam did you get your visas direct from the embassy or did you use a company to facilitate the process?

We have just returned and would normally, for most countries, get our own visas, by post.

On this occasion, however, we used the visa service provided by Trailfinders. Our rationale being:

1. They were brilliant in booking (and prices) of flights
2. There seemed to be less chance of passports (posted to V Service rather than mention the word visa) going astray by using services addressed to, or from, an embassy.

The process was straightforward, although there was a heftyish premium paid. It did take away some of the worry though............

It must be a matter of personal choice, however.

Slightly off topic, I would recommend the Cambodia e-visa service. Quick, simple (visa printed out on line) and payable by debit card with no need to send off passport. You do need good quality passport photos available as jpegs. This saved a lot of time and hassle on arrival.

we used a courier through the services of the travel company as we also required a double entry visa to china. We were on a cruise, The Sapphire princess, which included Bangkok,Saigon, Shanghai and Beijing. The courier firm were first class, so we had no problems.

JUst have to say we sent the visas direct to the embassy.
I had checked the costs etc by email with them- very quick response and they advised turn around was 5 working days from recepit of the passports.
So duly sent special delivery and 5 working days later they were back with us
No fuss and bother
And they take personal cheques!

Indian embassy could learn a thing or two

I must admit I was hugely impressed by the service via the embassy direct. Sent them off, and within days they were back. Absolutely no problems whatsoever.

There seems to be quite a few TOs doing Indochina, including Vietnam these days.

For our trip in Feb / Mar this year, we got Trailfinders to do a lot of the organisation (with some DIY stuff thrown in). The good thing about T/F was that they also went "off piste" to arrange a hotel the Phu Quoc through their local ground agents.

Get their brochue from http://www.trailfinders.com/brochures and then talk through your requirements and their suggestions.

We have also had good experiences througout SE Asia with Premier Holidays http://www.premierholidays.co.uk/far_east/vietnam_cambodia_and_laos, (they won the British Travel awards 2008 and are an independant). Once again suggest getting their brochure and giving them a call (would suggest normal working hours as their weekend operators do not seem so knowledgeable (although this may be slightly unfair and based upon our personal experience).

Enjoy - we will be going back and probably going from Vietnam to Phnom Penh (or vice-versa) by boat. This will probably not be until 2011 though, as the next two Far East trips are booked (September) and planned (Feb / Mar).

we are going to use them later this year but a friend has used them this week and everything was done very quickly. Will report back later this month as she is going in middle of September.

Actually if you book through a decent specialist Tour Operator, you can get a Visa on Arrival for Vietnam.

They take your details, and get pre-approval in Hanoi, and it's all set-up for you on arrival. It's not for last minute trips, i'm not sure if it can be organised if you are travelling independently, and I know some companies claim ignorance as it's more work for them.

But good companies realise it's easier than taking a day off work etc... and will happily organise it in conjunction with your trip. There are also limited arrival points - that include the two main airports, but I know it's not every international entry point.
