I've been in the same sort of situation in the past( not with Caxton). It is really frustrating and can be an absolute nightmare if you haven't a back up card. Its worth highlighting.
I spoke to Caxton yesterday. They simply do not accept any responsibility. I explained that on the two occasions this occured I was charged £6.06. The card is not a reliable source of cash so I asked for the money on it to be transferred back to sterling on the linked card. Guess what, they charge to do that. Anyone relying on this card for cash could find themselves in trouble
There have been an increasing number of cases where cards have been declined abroad even though people have funds, or have contacted their card suppliers before going on holiday.
It seems that telling them does not manage to work its way through to the computer systems that actually authorise the the payments.
Personally we now take cash and the cards are simply taken with us in case of emergency.
