Several hotels I have been a guest at in Benidorm have also provided scales in the Reception area of the Hotel. I think this is a very good idea actually....but to date I have never had a problem at Alicante Airport, despite being advised every time by Thomson Reps that if your luggage is overweight you WILL face excess baggage charges as the Check In clerks at Alicante are very strict....not been my experience in all the years I've passed through Alicante Departures, and I am sure my luggage is overweight on the return journey....although not by very much.

But according to Thomsons you will be charged no matter how little overweight your suitcase is. But as I say, I've never had a problem to date. I did post something about this in the Airports section if I recall but never got any feedback.

But, yes, scales in Hotel Receptions are not that uncommon in as far as I am aware, and if one is not on display is it always worth asking one of the receptionists as it may be stored away, say to prevent children from messing it up.

They had scales in the Las Margaritas hotel in Gran Canaria, first time I'd seen them, good job I didn't weigh my case before we set off for home, I was quite a bit over, and would have been panicking all the way to the airport. The woman at Las Palmas airport just tutted and rolled her eyes and said nothing, so we were lucky there.
I've got some of those balance/hook scales too! They're a good idea.
