I'm always amazed when I get to the airport how some passengers have only a tiny handbag as hand luggage while others have a mini case on wheels or a massive holdall! (Despite the size restrictions they're supposed to have now).
I tend to take a medium sized shoulder bag/handbag, big enough for a book, a couple of magazines, and a small makeup bag with a few bits of makeup/tissues/handcream in, a mini toothbrush & toothpaste (just in case we get delayed overnight), body spray and the obvious travel documents such as tickets/passports and money. Also the essential bottle of water and a packet of sweets!
I for one envy you Jingles for being able to travel so light. I have to bring my CPAP handbaggage, a multiplug adapter plus an empower socket for longhaul flights, medicines, toothpaste and brush, wallet and contents, tissues, and water bought after security control ..........

As I travel with hand luggage only on a regular basis I take a small regulation size trolley with everything I need for a few days.Friends are always amazed at what I can fit in even obeying the weight limits. When I travel long haul I always take a handbag with tickets etc then my carry on trolley with small sized toiletries, Mp3 player, book, change of clothes (My hold luggage didn't arrive for a few days on one trip, so I always carry some clothes in hand luggage) medicines, multiplug etc., leaving enough space to fit my bottle of Vodka and anything else that I buy at 'duty free'.
I have invested in a 'Tintamar' pocket into which you put all the sort of things that you need to take with you in any handbag you have. It has one main compartment that can be closed with a drawstring and has nine pockets around the outside of it for mobile phones and bits and bobs. It is meant to save you time as you just pick up the pocket and put it into any bag rather than having to transfer items one at a time. I am not certain at the moment whether to use it for my flight bag or leave it at home.
With the restrictions still in force regarding fluids,I now use a flight bag and put my shoes in it! Sun creams, makeup, perfume and toiletries and my version of Boots the chemist have to go in hold luggage so I only take a MP3,a blow up neck cushion and a book on board.
i also put a small little handbag in there so when we get on the plane i can put my passport and money in there (so i can see it instead of it being above me)
but im silly i dont do the overnight delay thing. i never pack for that. but my friend when away and got a 24 hour delay and had nothing so im thinking twice when i go to road next year, im going to put some of my clothes in my boyfriends case just incase and the same for him.
i was annoyed this year cos the way they handle our cases in rhodes airport opned my make up and my £25 clique make up had broken and leaked.
but i had a spare onne thank god 2 weeks with no make noooo thank you lol
if i am going scuba diving, my hand luggage contains my reg set and my camera and casing. If not, my handluggage contains travel plug adapter, phone chargers, ipods, camera and a few boiled sweets. At the airport, i acquire magazines etc. I am always the one that carries all the tickets, passports, insurance, E1-11 cards and money. The kids usually have rucksacks containing goodies and after check in with security, they have bottles of water. Also, they have little things to keep them amused such as a pack of cards etc.
Since the restrictions - easy. I carry a bag which is big enough to put handbag in. I carry travel documents, camera, sunglasses and a book. My handbag within there has got money, ciggies, some tissues, mobile phone and that's about it folks.
There is enough room in the bag for duty frees to go in.
Used to go loaded up with all sorts , but got more sensible as I got older ( well I think I have anyway ) I have a lightweight travel rucksack, I usually have a book, sweets, some food and some money for the airport.
The rucksack is the best thing I have bought, I have had it about five years and I dont know ehat I would do without it. It is really useful when you are out and about on your holiday it expands and will fit in your towels etc. Then just sling it on your back and off you go........
Umm, when the children were younger, I used to carry a hand bag and travel bag, so crammed with things and heavy, that I could have given a marine a run for their money I always envied women carrying just a handbag onboard.
Hubby takes a smallish rucksack which has the flight confirmation, passports and insurance. It also holds the camera and some magazines for the flight, which I never read, and there is plenty of room for stashing the jackets/tops when we get to warmer climes.
I just don't understand why some people seem to need the largest carry on they are allowed and trolley cases, especially on short haul. They are stuffed into the overhead lockers and not used during the flight, so just what is so important that it has to go by hand luggage? Or am I missing something?
luci
I can answer that one Luci. We take one carry on, regulation size which has a days change of clothes and anything else that would not be easy to buy quickly. I've seen so many people with the beginning of their holiday ruined when luggage does not turn up. We usually go long haul and it always involves changing planes so there is more chance of luggage going missing. Quite often the first part of our holiday can be a short stopover and we have too much to see and do without shopping We actually have arrived without luggage twice but luckily that was on the way home.By the way I never pack my jewellry in hold
you are going on holiday, fellow travellers may not, necessarily be travelling for leisure but may well be on a business trip. This would involve an early start, say 5:00 a.m.,to catch the flight, a day or half-day of business and a return home, after travelling from the airport, at around 7:30p.m. Anything that will shorten the day, like carrying hand luggage rather than spending the best part of an hour standing at carousels, will help.
It should be remembered that,although
If you are going to spend a few days with friends it makes sense to only have hand luggage and thus avoid the wait for baggage reclaim. If I'm doing this I've got a decent holdall which, although slightly over-sized, fits into the 'cage' without any problems. If I've got hold luggage I also carry a nylon holdall which weighs absolutely nothing but is superb for any extra bits you need, particularly on the journey home if you've spent the day by the pool and only actually got properly dressed for the flight.
carousel and exit, and easier on the body.
Lots of my flights are between England and Germany on a regular basis only staying a few days, and using only hand luggage means I am out of the airport and on my way without having to hang around waiting for luggage after an often stressfull day.
Hubby carries a rusksack with the camera, nintendo DS, our ipods, toothbrushes & toothpaste, my jewelry, our sunglasses, my pashmina & big fluffy socks (my feet often get really cold for some reason), blow-up pillows & eye shades, water and magazines or books we're taking.
i dont put much in hand luggage, just carry a beach type bag with all the documents,a book and usual things like money and and a drink and sweets for the kids.Never really thought about change of cloths and stuff if we lost our luggage.Maybe cos im nearly 40 now and in all the years travelling abraod ive never lost anything but i suppose it could happen to anyone

At last I get it! Now I know how all those women ahead of me in the queue for security seem to manage to travel so much lighter than me when it comes to the hand luggage. I forgot that absolute travel essential - a man to lug it all around for you. Note to self - add 'MAN' to shopping list before I go away next time. Anybody any suggestions as to where I might obtain one that is low cost, low maintenance, silent running, never, ever wants to watch the footie whilst on holiday, doesn't moan he's bored and wants a drink when I want to hit the shops and has muscles like Kenny Logan but can dance much better than him? Does the 'Matt Dawson' range come in a large size as well as the standard one by any chance? Got some excellent cases at a really good price from Matalan last year but never spotted the essential 'MAN' to go with them. Don't want to pay too much for him - do TK Maxx or Primark stock them at all? :-)
SM
I'd offer you mine, he's low cost, low maintenance and never wants to watch football anywhere, but unfortunately he doesn't like travelling which is why I mostly go on holiday on my own and have developed muscles from lugging around suitcases for years.
