what i like most about food on holiday is that i dont have to prepare or cook it :rofl

That's a big plus llindy ;)

Just love the smells of foreign food especially greek. A lot of it is slow cooked so the smell lingers in the air and is very tempting. I don't have much of an apetite in the mornings so a Greek breakfast of Greek yoghurt and some bread does me fine followed by a lovely feta salad for lunch washed down with a glass of ouzo or metaxa. I'm spoilt for choice with evening meal as I love all the Greek dishes, my favourite being lamb kleftico mmm. 53 days and counting.

As far as I'm concerned, the food is part of the holiday. On the occasions when the weather has been rubbish the thought of dinner has been all that's kept me going!

I can't get the people who want to travel to other countries but not eat the local food, it's part of the country and if nothing else it's insulting to the locals to expect British food everywhere. I used to like Tavira in Portugal but the best restaurant there has now become an Irish pub with a menu that looks like it was copied from any branch of O'Neils. And their menu is a British pub menu with colcannon added to every third main course! If I wanted Irish food I'd go to Ireland.

Local food tends to go with the weather, if it's been 40 degrees all day and still warm in the evening is a heavy British roast dinner suitable? And if you'd just spent a cold day tramping round Britain in the rain would you be looking forward to a nice Greek salad?

I was gobsmacked to see an advert for Iceland food in Spain in the current easyjet magazine. Apparently there are so many British people in Spain who think imported frozen fish from a UK name is better than the fresh stuff from the local markets that there is now a growing chain of franchised outlets.

Food is such a big part of our Greek hols and trying lots of lovely new little tavernas some of them out of the tourist places is the reason why we only ever book B&B or S/C. Am always planning my next meal!
Breakfast, bread and cheese maybe some ham, tomatos and watermelon, lunch Greek Salad, bread, olives, beetroot and then for dinner more of the same plus calamari and other little bits and bobs, all washed down with a glass or two of wine or mythos! 5 weeks and 5 days and counting! I eat so much calamari on hols that I never eat it inbetween- by time I go back to Greece I cannot wait for it!

Basically Lindy has taken words out of my mouth, the fact that someone is cooking it, serving it and washing up for me is a massive massive bonus :rofl

Trying the local food - can't understand people who go abroad and want the same stuff they eat here!

I agree Blondiescott I like to experience as much as I can, I don't with fish or seafood as it makes me sick but I like to try - but I guess each person gets something different from their holidays don't they

For me the last few year has either been the Greek Island of Zakynthos or Cyprus and it will be again this year.
Breakfast maybe Greek yoghurt and fruit, lunch feta cheese salad, dips with bread and maybe a glass of wine and EM could be a barbecue, Metz ( a meal on their own) or delicious vegetables whichever way they are cooked served of course with wine, then onto the cocktails. :sun2

Food plays a large part in my holiday, which is why I too veer towards B & B in the Greek Islands. Like previous posters the thought of freshly cooked bread, tsatsiki & olives make my mouth water. All afternoon I look forward to my evening meal of lamb kleftiko, beef stifado or chicken souvlaki :tup

Bit of a hard one for me, as we always visit home in Cyprus, it's Greek food but because my girls are half Greek that's pretty much all we eat in England too! My eldest daughter loves to make Spanakopita with her yiayia and for my youngest she is constantly making olive bread. The girls love to go with their aunts and uncles and grandparents in the summer and collect all the olives off the trees.

However, when we are in Cyprus - you know about it! You can buy tzatziki in Sainsbury's :yuck and feel like your eating god knows what. Then go to Cyprus and make it fresh and feel like your in heaven! Definately a difference between "Greek food" here and "Greek food" there!

What I don't understand is I never eat breakfast at home but on holiday I wake up absolutely ravenous. I always enjoy my breakfast abroad and make several trips to the buffet! I love trying new food,I don't understand Brits abroad who want a full English or chips.

Actually despite all the fantastic food we have in SE Asia , satays, green papaya salads, amoks, tom yam, nasi goreng, green, yellow red and massman curry, beef and holy basil stir fry etc etc etc we sometimes crave something Western...sausage egg and chips would go down nicely :)

I know exactly how you feel Sunbear. After an extensive tour of China nearly 20 years ago even though the food on the tour had been superb we longed for something familiar and upon reaching Hong Kong we immediately headed to Harry Ramsdens for fish and chips.

Not quite the same I know, but afteer I have been on holiday when I get home I always crave Home made Roast Pots I don't think many countries can do roast pots well.

I make hubby laugh, when on return from foreign shores I always serve up various foreign dishes for a few weeks until I get that food out of my system :D

We have been going to Greece for years too, s/c, and love the simplicity of the food. Like others have said, I don't see the point of going abroad to live as we do at home. OH goes out for warm bread first thing, I have butter and local honey, he has plastic ham (which he never eats at home!) and local cheese. Then we usually have one meal out and salad or bakery pie for the other meal We also have local wine, even though I don't usually drink. Lots of fresh fruit too.

Back home we have a mainly mediterranean diet through the "Summer" there is so much to try. But when winter comes it's back to mash and yorkies and casseroles British style.

Metaxa and Ouzo taste awful over here! :tongue

ooh I wouldn't say that :D but you can't beat drinking it looking out to sea, in the Greek sunshine with some Greek music in the background :cheers
