Mark,
To be fair my Monarch experience was long-haul so consequently avoided short-haul. Happy to listen to other peoples views.
My worst Balkan air, smoking on one side of the plane non smoking on the other. The luggage racks were nets like on a old coach. The meal was a chunk of cheese, chunk of bread and a chunk of cucumber, try cutting that with a plastic knife. Wine was free (I didn`t like wine then pity). In the airport a old chap kept falling over, we thought he was having a fit, turned out to be the wine, he went every year and drunk the plane dry. Saw him and his wife next day the sweetest old couple you could imagine. On the way home with Balkan we got chicken was the best meal we`d had in a week as Bulgaria didn`t have a lot of choice whilst we were there.
Worst journey Monarch 757 (Airtours charter) to Phuket x man via Barain and Bangkok, got seats at the back of the plane, both of us are tall, seats don`t recline at the back. It took 17 hours, but it was such a bargain holiday, that I would do it all again.
British Airways - when I was upgraded to Club and got a flat bed
Short haul - Monarch or Easyjet
Worst:
Cubana (or trying to disguise themeslves as Air Atlanta) - the crew were Cuban and we wondered what we had let ourselves in for, they were surly and disappeared for hours on end. Plane was a rickety ex Singapore Airlines Jumbo, we paid for an upgrade on the return journey and got the same cr***y food, the only good thing were the seats.
Worst: Years ago I travelled to Malta with AirUKLeisure - everything about the flights was appalling and if it had been my first flight, I don't think I would have ever got on an aircraft again! Thankfully, I don't think they are trading any more.
So the best is Air Berlin, simply because they did what they said they would, better than they said they would in a simple and efficient way. Just a pity their Manchester service is so limited.
Worst by a very long way was Alitalia who were the exact opposite. They didn't lose my bag, but that was the only thing they got right! And I was lucky, they actually managed to fly some bags home to Manchester and lost the passengers in Milan!!!
Worst Aeroflot Dubai to Moscow. Worst Charter Thomsonfly.
Best Airlines for me
Worst. British Caladonian, Edinburgh-Newcastle- Amman- Goa Terrible leg room, no entertainment (it was broken) not allowed off the plane while it was refuelled in Jordan, time on plane 14.5 hours Too bad really as it was an old Tri Star and I'd a soft spot for them, but I dont suppose many remember them now Alan
although when i went to cyprus last year with Air malta was very nice!
the "not so" best-
to be honest, i cant really say ive had a "terrible" flight before exept from when i have some little kid sat infront of me and everytime i would look down to do my wordsearch or read he would keep pulling my hair! & his dad would just sit and laugh at him for 4 hours ! ... oh & the time my family had food poisning with firstchoice
CourtneeLouise x
Only done BA longhaul, but they didn't lose my bag and the legroom was awful. I intend to try Singapore Air for an Oz trip in a few years time (wife's 40th).
Worst was a flight in about '93 with a Spanish outfit called Oasis Air - thankfully now defunct. Had to get seats in smoking (I don't), meal awful, service terrible and no IFE as it was an MD83. 4 hrs to TFS wasn't pleasant and couldn't wait to get off. Managed to get seats nearer the front on the return but the flight was still cr@p.
Never had a brilliant experience with Airtours, but Thomson have always been OK at various bases.
Etihad, easily
Worst is Monarch by such a long way I'd have to get an Etihad flight to get there!!
Etihad - Fantastic, simply fantastic. Flew to Bangkok with them for £360 return. 2 hour stopover in Abu Dhabi was no problem. New planes, good legroom, biggest TV screens of any world airline in cattle class (10"), movies on demand and loads of online 'albums' so you can listen to lots of music, it's like having your own online mp3 player! Games as well. Service was great. I really can't recommend them enough.
Monarch were the most cramped I've ever been on and when our flight back from Egypt got re-routed because of trouble in the middle east our flight home took 11 hours! In all that time we were offered one drink. Monarch are quite frankly a disgrace and even if I was offered free flights with them, I wouldn't take them unless the flight was under 2 hours.
My opinion on other airlines I've flown with -
Virgin - Have slowly got worse over the last 15 years. Planes are now dated and the service much worse than it used to be
BA - Have only flown short haul and they were very good
Ryanair - Not too bad to be honest, you get what you pay for and they are normally on time for me
Easyjet - Not as good as Ryanair, normally run late and a bit more expensive
United - Not bad, average seat pitch and ok IFE, would fly with them again
Thai - Nothing wrong with them but vastly overhyped in my opinion. Expensive and cramped in cattle class, In flight entertainment is awful, I won't fly with them again.
American Airlines were very comfortable, spacious and good IFE - although I believe they have now reduced their cattle class legroom
Southwest - Excellent on short haul trips within the USA, they even managed to serve drinks and sandwiches during a 45 minute flight from L.A. to Vegas!! Ryanair and Easyjet take note!!
Eva - Flew to Bangkok with them in evergreen deluxe (business class), got it for £650 and loved the space but the IFE was poor, as was the food.
Continental - Simialr to Virgin (they are partners as it happens), ok, not great, not awful
Northwest Airlines - Cramped, old planes and even older cabin crew - this is where they all go when they retire!! The youngest stewardess must have been 55!! I wanted to offer her my seat Seriously....don't fly with these!!

worst flight ever was balkan, kamakazi pilot and miserabal stewedesses, never again. the best ever first choice always
Easyjet, BMIBaby
worse Futura , not sure if this ailine are still operating if so i hope the staff have had a refresher course in customer services.
Flying for first time with XL soon cant comment yet
BA (well under BA flag anyway) - Manchester to Frankfurt on a Embraer ERJ 145 - what a fantastic little aircraft. I was the only person in Club Class so it was like having my own private jet.
Worst
Dan-Air - obviously many years ago. Flew in (as the captain told us) the last Comet in service !!!!
Uncomfortable, noisy and the emergency exit window rattled all the way to Geneva !
Most interesting
Balkan to Bourgas around 2000 - 2001. Hand painted Tu154 (you could see the brush strokes), 'unusual' food, and a FA who looked like she was a member of the Bulgarian Womens weightlifting team - no unruly passengers with her around
Huge, hand poured measures of Vodka, Gin or Whiskey.....that was it - no other alcoholic drinks available.
I remember flying over Germany then it gets a litle hazy
John.
Best for Longhaul, Malaysia or Thai
Worst for shorthaul Ryanair, flew with them once and never again.
Worst for Longhaul, Cubana(hardest seat ever) with both Virgin and Emirates (cramped seating) running a close second. Though my worst flight ever was with Cathay about 12 years ago, the seats were cramped, the food poor and a large percent of the passengers were teenagers returning to their boarding schools in the UK after spending Easter with their families in Hong Kong, the flight was a nightmare, noisy kids partying for over 12 hours with the flight attendants ignoring them and my assigned seat was given away and the seat I ended up with was next to the toilets with interruptions all night long.
Best Business Long Haul, BA (Super Flat Beds) and Singapore (Great Service).
Worst Business Long Haul, United
Best flight many years ago was Laker airways (Freddie Laker) to Florida, & also many years ago worst was Air Columbus (no frills airline of TAP (Portugal), gladly they are no longer in business, this flight was booked as a last minute thing as the flight centre we had booked to fly with Air 2000 to Faro went bust a week before the holiday, and it was the only flight available to us. We now fly mainly shorthaul with Monarch Schedule and are very satisfied.
Worst;Northwest Airlines and Monarch
Best short haul;Tuifly and BA.
Worst,Cypria airways and First Choice
Worst Long Haul: Phillipine Airlines
Best Short Haul: Quite like Flybe
Long Haul: Toss up between Etihad and Thai (though Thai need to update their fleet, I just love their cabin service)
Best- Air France, really good food and friendly service with a smile, and very attentive. Arrival and departure times to the minute and no luggage problems despite connections.
Virgin Atlantic, Easyjet,Thomson
Worst Airline
Ryanair,BA and My Travel or my tech as they used to get called in my house, ever time I flew with them they always used to go tech or the best one I ever heard for a delay on my flight to Kos, the customer service Rep, said that they had lost the plane, how can you lose an airbus..then on the way back from Greece the plane was tech again..
