My main reason for replying to your post was your question about driving. We always hire a car whenever we go to Turkey. Just remember to expect the unexpected and you'll be fine. It's also another reason for me recommending having a look at the Bodrum peninsula (Gumbet, Bodrum, Bitez, Yalikavak, Turgetreis, Gundogan are a few you could try) as the airport is only 35km from Bodrum and once you're on the peninsula itself, the driving is great 'cos the traffic's not that busy apart from Bodrum itself and you can really get off the beaten track.
micky,
Turunc sounds like it might suit you. Its in a beautiful bay, surrounded by mountains. It's quite compact with a main street pedestrianised at night, lined with great restaurants and bars, but the evenings are quite low-key.
There are regular taxi-boats to and from Marmaris and Icmeler if you want somewhere lively for a change, and there are loads of boat trips from the harbour.
If you hire a car, the bozburun peninsula is lovely, quite different - rolling landscapes and lots of small farming communities, and off the beaten track little bays. You can also go a bit further to Datca, which is an amazing journey, at one stage the med is on one side of you and the aegean on the other.
Other places to look at are Dalyan and Akyaka, both also beautiful.
Its worth doing your research because the resorts do vary wildy, some of them are large, busy, bustling, brash, commercialised and very touristy. Which is great if thats what you want, but the ones I've mentioned above are a world away.
Wherever you go, transport is great, its very easy to get around by dolmus or taxi-boat, so in most places there's still plenty to do without the need to hire a car. Always you will find the Turkish extremely friendly and welcoming.
Hope you have a great holiday!
The Bodrum Peninsula is a great place to explore and it is very easy to find your way around.
