I love it when I hear such story's. Somebody I knew told about a time when he came back at 3am after a night out, nearly every sunbed had a towel on it. He got the lot and chucked them in the pool. The next night he said not one on towel on the sunbeds.

I just don't see the need to put a towel down, if nobody did it there wouldn't be a problem. It must be in some peoples genes, scientist will discover the gene some day.

When we stayed at the Sun City 2 years ago we met a couple who when they went home he left his towel.We put a German book on top of it and it was still there when we left 2 days later!I often wonder how long it remained on the sunbed.It was a very distinctive towel as it had a huge can of Heinz beans on it!

i remember one time after a week of not getting a sun bed i was so fed up i went to the barman and said this isnt on having people putting towels on at midnight and he agreed and took them all off and piled them in the corner , it didnt happen for the rest of the week, but putting them in the pool much better idea, it does annoy me when people do this and some even take the brolleys back to their rooms as if they own them lol !!!

Must admit, I have also been guilty of queueing up to put towels on the beds, on the days were I knew we would be spending the day round the pool, remeber one year we went away, and queued up along with the crowd, door got opened, stampede to beds, there is me just walking to beds, the next minute this towel flies over my shoulder and lands on the bed were I was just about to place our towels, this guy comes rushing up and goes to place his towels on the bed, were I was laying out my towel, I just stood there and looked at him, I made no attempt to move my towel, and continued to lay my towel out, and sat on the bed, and gave him a smile, lets just say, he was not impressed, he picked up his towel, mumbling under his breathe, and went on to find other beds
I must admit, I was quite dumb founded, at him throwing the towel over my shoulder to land on the bed
This years holiday in Tunisia, the life guard saved our beds every morning, which was brill, and meant no early morning queues, or morning stampedes

This is always an interesting topic.

I absolutely take the hump at beds being reserved early and no one on them. You get the notices up saying not to do it but it seems so ingrained into people's psyche that they are like Pavlovs dogs and continue to do it. I would LOVE to be brave enough to take towels off but the one time I did it (after sitting on an uncomfortable plastic chair looking at dozens of empty beds) I was accosted by a very large red angry lady with large red children and she ranted and raved so much I stayed away from the whole pool area to avoid her

One complex we stayed in had the cleaners going round and if the bed wasnt "obviously" occupied they lifted the towels and set them on the stage! It was funny watching people with red faces going up to collect them.

Seriously Ray's right. Fair enough if you are a morning person and enjoy sitting there at that time, but when you leave your sunbed for a length of time..............dont you think that others could be having the use of it?

Mmmm, don't know about us Brits being the worst offenders and I suppose if you are in a hotel where the majority are British guests, then I suppose it will look like we are obsessed with beds.
However, many years ago, I stayed in the Hotel Sabinal in Roquetas de Mar and it was full of Germans at the time, and they really were obsessed.
At night when we were coming back to the hotel, we noticed that not only had they got their towels on the beds, but they had tied the beds together with string and plastic bags from the local supermarket, that they had knotted together to make a rope/"string".
Not content with just 2 beds, the string went through a couple of plastic chairs, a plastic table for the drinks and believe it or not, the string went through an iron loop on the bottom of the concrete base for a parasol.
Some of them must have come armed with a length of "washing line".

I'm very proud to say that I was peed off one night and threw the towels in the pool and with my cigarette lighter I burnt through the plastic bags and scattered the beds/chairs anywhere, then the next night I took a small pair of scissors with me from the toilet bag and cut the string.
I was brave, but there again, it was dark and I was going home in less than 48 hours.

Hooligan.? Probably in those days.

When the kids were younger, my hubby used to get up early for the sunbeds and one day he looked at me and said.
"This is ridiculous, I'm supposed to be on holiday and I'm getting up earlier than I do for work, if you want a sunbed, then you get up early for one"
We never fought for a sunbed from that day, but now there is just the two of us, we plonk ourselves down anywhere.

The hotel that I've just come back from (costa del sol) had no one doing the sunbed dash.
17 beds only for a reasonable sized hotel and I never saw one single person use them, everybody just goes to the beach.

I'm not surprised the way they are all crammed together! I like a bit of space between myself and sweaty strangers!

no-one OWNS the sunbeds they are facilities you can use and if you're not using them then perhaps someone else who has paid for the facilities might want to use them, if people want to get up at the crack of dawn to bag a suitably positioned sunbed then thats fine as long as they are going to use it for the majority of the day.

Our last few holidays have been in private villas, so no rushing for sunbeds, but we're off to Egypt soon and no doubt like a previous poster said i'll be getting up earlier than i do for work to get sunbeds its either that or putting up with the missus wingeing all day long about unsuitably positioned sunbeds! and she wouldn't like the sunbeds in that picture as the sunbed has to be re-positioned every 15 mins to face the sun so i need to get sunbeds that are quite near the pool , close to the bar, have no infringing trees or other shade and space to revolve the bed 360 degrees

i think the brits and germans are the worst and main offenders we strangely seem to have the same mentality as Sanji says its not just the sunbeds , tables, parasols etc have to be comandeered

I am always up early and sat on a sunbed reading at 06.30, when in Cyprus this year the under manager of the hotel removed towels while people were having breakfast,there were still 50% of the sunbeds available,the slanging match that followed was quite heavy with the Rep being slagged off for his attitude.The best part was when they were told it was due to a complaint by one guest that she couldnt get a sunbed in the sun where she wanted to be at 10.30am, most guests knew who the complainer was and the best part she spent most of the time under a sun shade.Needless to say all guests were Brits.

We always send one outside that has to sleep on the sunbed overnight! Lol not really. We never really tend to be in a bit rush for a sunbed as we don't really spend a lot of time around the pool if we are in a hotel, we have a had a few occasions though where they are all gone by 6am, and on one occasion i remember it was Germans.

I think everyone on here has no problem with people getting up early to reserve sunbeds if they are using them, like you, reading early in the morning or whatever.

Quite honestly I think the Under manager was doing his job well!!! If those that complained about towels being removed were not either on them, in the pool or around the pool area then their towels shouldnt have been there.

I hope you remove your towel when having breakfast/lunch in the Hotel dining room, this is what the Thomsons Rep said All had to do,might as well say remove it if you use the pool.Total overkill because of one pain in the butt.

To be honest that situation regarding lifting towels at lunch/breakfast etc doesnt arise for our family because we only ever spend a couple of hours at the pool reading a book and having a quick swim. my idea of a holiday is to see and do.......... but its irritating when you walk down to spend that short time and see a "sea" of towels and not one sunburned bum on them!

I just fail to see why people think that they put a towel down they "own" it for the day regardless of going shopping/lunch/market/pub they expect it to be sitting waiting for them when they get back! The worst are the people who get up early and leave them there till 4pm "just in case they want to use them"

If we all had a bit of thought for each other no one would get so irritated about it.

I can understand the guest in question having a problem if she were to come down at 10.30am to find no beds available but no or hardly any other guests using the taken sunbeds, however if only half of the available beds had towels on them at breakfast time then I don't see the problem. That says to me that people have come down for brekkie, towels in hand, put them down on beds ready to go straight out to the pool area after they've eaten.

I do understand why people do this, larger hotels often have nowhere near the number of beds for the number of guests. Thing is that people wouldn't feel the need to come down early if it weren't for those who 'reserve' beds when they're going out for a half a day. That would annoy me intensely.

Exactly. So how do you stop them? Well I think the answer is for the hotel staff to lift them after a reasonable time, say an hour or so.

In the hotel we stayed in two years ago they did this nearly every day and let me tell you it really worked!

Saying all that I bet the hotel staff get such a laugh at watching the floorshow..............you only have to watch Benidorm Unpacked to see how they felt about it!
