we did DIY last year for the first time and it was as easy as booking with a reputable company.
There was 5 adults and 2 kids (both under 3) and we found it to be a cheaper way at the time of going to majorca.
My parents had been to the resort the previous year and got talking to a bar owner who owned some properties which we rent out and also could arrnage pick up/drop off too and from the airport. We booked the flights around the time the new timetables came out so the flights cost us around £450/500 for all of us.
I think the whole holiday cost in the region of £1500/1800 which is a huge saving.
The only problem we had was that a week before we went we had to move apartments because of some building work but was moved to another place and also very generously was offered a further weeks stay at the original place free of charge whenever we wanted.
We was very dubious before we left but like someone mentioned earlier we didn't have to pay the full balance until the end of our holiday.
We have arranged to go with thomsons this year purely because of the ages of our kids and because of the facilities that they offer. For the price of 2 adults/2 kids its as expensive as the DIY holiday for 5 adults.
We will go DIY in the future but when the kids are a bit older.
You make an important point - in that DIY is not always the cheapest. The TRavel Operators have to make decisions at the beginning of the season, and sometimes get it wrong, and they end up offering some very good offers - particularly as you say with Children's places.
The secret is to be smart, and look at all the options.
I heard of one family who booked a REALLY cheap package holiday to a naff Hotel, and used the flights and the transfers, but then booked their own accomodation at a different Hotel, and saved a bundle.
It seems like the Operators are in a turmoil with Easter this year, with different Local Authorities having different school holidays, so there's maybe a few bargains to be had there - even during School Holidays. Serves them right
Cheers
Adam
PS - Just a tempter - today must be the warmest day of the year so far - well into the 70's - the weather has been virtually unbroken sunshine since Christmas.
You've just made my day!!
If I win the euro's tonight I may drop in on my world tour Goodfellow.
