Hiya.
Just read this article about changing the direction the plane seats could be facing in the future.
I would hate to be facing backwards, I have this problem when travelling on a train and my back is facing the engine.
I get very disorientated and I would imagine that seeing the ground move from under me, (backwards), it would not help the travel sickness that I manage to keep under control by not moving in an aircraft if I can help it...even for the loo. CLICK HERE
Of course it means more seats packed in a plane
I'd rather them put a bed in

Have never flown before but would you really 'feel' any difference going backwards in the air?
Hi Sanji, Going back to 1983, we flew to Tenerife with Airtours on an old Dan Air plane. It was a night flight with no meals included, so we took a large flask of coffee and some brandy with us. Our seats were at the back of the plane two forward facing and two backward, with a table in between. Us, and the two people opposite spent the entire journey drinking coffee laced with brandy, we even got the stewardess to bring us another half bottle. It was quite an entertaining flight. Don't know what it would be like though with all of the seats in that arrangement.
If they are bringing this in would there be an extra charge for a forward facing seat?
Hush Don't give them any ideas, if it means a money grabbing opportunity, you bet your bottom dollar they will be charged extra. IMO.
I bet "take-off" will feel queer, when the force is pushing you out of your seat....unless you're strapped in like Luke Skywalker.

probably no different to an Alton Towers ride then

Hi Mike.
I flew to Tenerife around that time with good old Dan Dare, but I can't remember those seats.
What I can remember is having a middle seat on a 3-3 configuration and the bottom hanging out of the seat, plus it was a right bone shaker, they were fetching green paper towels out of the toilets and stuffing them in the roof of the cabin to soak up the water that was dripping on the passengers.

Not sure that I fancy the "ying-yang" style seating. Imagine spending several hours facing a family of brats, complete nightmare. At least with the current seating configuration, you are pretty isolated from all around so you can fall asleep and dribble down your chin in relative privacy
I personally prefer sitting facing the rear on a train but definitely wouldn't like it on a plane if the seats are facing each other as I should hate to be staring at someone opposite me for hours or alternatively having to bury my nose in a book or shut my eyes. I can see advantages for families if they can sit that way, though pity the poor couple or single traveller who is sitting with them.
I've flown several times facing backwards during my time in the forces in the RAF's great VC10's, although I can't remember feeling uncomfortable during take off or landing at all. When I flew in their Tristars, we flew facing the front, and in the Hercules we flew sideways, facing into the middle, hence the RAF are known as "Crab Air" I think the safety people believe facing backwards reduces the chance of serious injury during a crash landing, because the decelleration forces are taken across your back which is protected by the seat back.
It looks as if we are going to be stuck with the mobile phone.
With a table, our errant upwardly mobile young thing, always trying to impress the boss, will have his laptop set up and all his papers. Can't let a little thing like a holiday get in the way.
Sharing with the family from hell the little darlings will be crayoning over his papers. Spilling orange juice over his laptop, and screaming so loud his boss will wonder what the hell he is up to.
Well I think it is funny.

What I couldnt understand in the article was as they are doing away with the armrests how is it your shoulder will be level with your neighbours thigh!!!!!.
I would truly hate that, you'd feel like you were falling out of your seat upon take off and I really wouldn't like to have to face a complete stranger for the duration of the flight. What if you get opposite the passenger from hell and their screaming kids? They'd be kicking your legs instead of your seatback. It'd take all my self control not to give them a slap. Yak, yak, yak!!!
P.S. can you tell I'm not too keen on the idea??
Perhaps the answer is to get rid of the seats - standing room only.
we have already travelled cattle class when we went to Egypt in December..we flew with Astreas and i am sure i have seen bigger models! Room was so cramped that as soon as we were allowed to take seatbelts off, a vast majority of people stood in the aisles and stayed there until it was time to descend and "belt up" again.
yes but with cattleclass it'll be the prices of now and seats will go up as they'll class it as luxury!
I guess any way that would give passengers a bit more room is worth giving serious consideration. Coming back from Sharm yesterday, for 5 and a half hours the person in front of me reclined their seat.
This was coupled with having two people behind me who weighed about 20 stone, a mother and son.
I saw them being moved from their allocated seats as presumably they wouldn't fit into them comfortably. Behind us were 3 empty seats so they could put up the arm rests and sit across all three. I thought this was quite accommodating of the staff but the lady still said "you expect me to fit into there?"
I have all the luck. Doe
And this is how the seating arrangement might look. Not sure I'm keen - don't mind flying backwards - but don't want to be so face to face with my neighbour.
very interesting. I would like the extra legroom but not so keen on facing someone. On our way home from New Orleans we moved to an empty row which meant you could put your head down- the new set up would scupper that!
Have just looked at the website. Goodness me! Jenny

Good point Fiona. I reckon it might lead to more unrest, even air rage amongst passengers...like you looking at me...you looking at me! Well yeah I can't help it, its the seat layout.
